Probiotics, how much is enough to create an effect? 13 billion seems
like a nice round number.

Honestly, I didn't think these would make such a difference. I've had Crohn's for almost ten years, and I've gotten used to *small* digestive upsets after I eat, even when in remission, such as cramping, discomfort, etc. I ordered these on a whim, and started taking one whenever I ate a meal.... what a huge, huge difference these have made. I can eat anything -- even unhealthy high fat meals, like American-Chinese food or mac & cheese -- without having to worry about stomach pain later. In fact, I typically have less of that "sluggish" feeling after high-fat restaurant meals than my friends, despite my Crohn's. Even for people who have no digestive problems, I absolutely _cannot_ recommend these enough -- this really is worth the money.

As a female, this helped me balance my system after my antibiotics threw me into a raging yeast infection! I was miserable and the OTC 1 Day for Yeast Infections did nothing. I picked up Probiotics along with Tea Tree Oil Suppositories, and Yeast Balance. Within 2 hours, I felt amazing and over 4 days, I felt FANTASTIC.This is definitely a daily must for me. If you eat sugars and carbs, I can say with confidence that your intestinal yeast is growing like wild! Cut out sugars, carbs, and add Probiotic to your daily dosage. Sweet.I'm 41 years old, and take no artificial meds. 100% holistic gal and feel fantastic. No bloating anymore and no gas build up in my gut. Highly recommend!

I love this stuff! I was diagnosed with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). It had never really been a big deal up until a couple years ago, when I began going through spells of DAYS without going to bathroom and then to the other extreme of going to bathroom TOO much! Didn't matter what I ate, or how I ate, it was beginning to cause me a great deal of PAIN and Discomfort. When the doctor suggested a prescription I threw it away. I hesitate anytime a doctor suggests any kind of prescription, but it didn't help that it cost $60 a month. So I began looking for alternatives when I came across this stuff. This, along with Fiber has saved me a LOT of MONEY, but also pain and discomfort.

1. Plain yogurt works just as well for me.
And I don't have to eat it every day, maybe a few times a month does the trick.

2. Some have no trouble with their nether regions, others do, some
try yogurt even the ones that GUARANTEE results with little help. This post is to reveal to those who do not know that such products exist. Many have a few million or perhaps a billion beneficial bacteria and are inadequate to achieve the results that people need. This is an FYI post for those who need to know.

To let you know it's all placebo effect. :eyes:

Meanwhile, I know you are right. I almost never go a day without some primadophilus, and when I do, I certainly notice. I take 4000 mg of flax seed oil per day as well. Tummy is happy.

5. It worked for my brother
He had TERRIBLE IBS--I mean debilitating--for decades. And as a trial attorney, it was pretty inconvenient to schedule a run to the bathroom 10 to 20 minutes after every meal. Then, because his body wasn't getting any nutrition, he developed a tremor in his hands--he shook like an old man--and his doctor tested him for Parkinson's. Of course it was negative. So the doctor just gave him medication to lessen the tremor--didn't bother trying to figure out what was causing it.

My brother is a stubborn sonofagun (runs in the family ;) ) but I appealed to my SIL to steer him toward a different doctor who would put him on a course of probiotics. I figured it was worth a shot. Just so happened I was right.

Now he can eat pretty much anything he wants, his tremor is completely gone, and he's probably added years to his life.

Pretty good results just for adding a few million critters back into his digestive tract.

6. Imagine the millions who were put on the other road and didn't
have anyone to detour them.... their plight is one of the reasons for extreme healthcare costs.

8. Absolutely.
Funny how the insurance companies don't want to contribute to health prior to some crisis. The investment of eating the right foods (and they don't have to be expensive foods) would save billions every year.

11. I'd like to know more about which probiotics work for people and which don't
There are so many on the market.

Some wholistic practioners point to a problem with BIFIDOBACTERIUM.

What are the least problematic strains?

What's the best yogurt? Does pasturizing reduce the probiotic effect?

13. I use
Nature's Way Primadophilus. It stays more potent if it has been refrigerated during its life.

I don't have a condition like the OP talks about. I take 1-2 caps a day. Ingredients are: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Vitamin C, Gelatin, Gelatin Enteric Coating, Magnesium Stearate, Maltodextrin.

And organic flax seed oil.

15. ...
OREGANO AERIAL PART OIL EXTRACT (ORIGANUM VULGARE)
Oregano is an antifungal effective at combating yeast problems, particularly candida. Active ingredients are the volatile oils thymol and carvacol.

THYME LEAF AND STEM OIL EXTRACT (THYMUS VULGARIS)
More thymol. Kills bugs in your aquarium too! :7

Peppermint Leaf Oil Extract (Mentha X Piperita)
Peppermint calms the stomach and digestive tract lining, giving a better environment for more active herbs and other foods to correct the imbalance.

GOLDENSEAL (HYDRASTIS CANADENSIS) ROOT AND RHIZOME EXTRACT STANDARDIZED TO CONTAIN 5% TOTAL ALKALOIDS INCLUDING BERBERINE, HYDRASTINE, AND CANADINE.
This is an antiseptic/antibiotic herb but shouldn't be taken if you are pregnant due to the alkaloid content.

Add a lot of garlic to your diet as well. And lots of water.

Eating yogurt is great, but most (not all) of the beneficial organisms are killed off in the stomach's hydrochloric acid. The enteric primadophilus products are released after the stomach and more effective.

18. thnx
Great info, really helpful. It's a puzzle to figure out what's going on in my system .. have to get exact at this point.
I tried garlic but it makes my system go crazy. Probably too strong until I build things back up.

I've heard yogurt is overrated and the dairy can be a problem with lactase.
