Testing of 2,000 Autistic children -- lead & mercury in blood 50 percent higher than normal.
The full clinical study is linked below this post, along with an article by the Huffington Post here:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/stephen-barrie-nd/child-autism-epidemic-fir_b_696179.html

Stephen Barrie, ND: "My own recent study of a large autistic clinical database shows that children with autism had elevated levels in their bodies of several chemicals known to be neurotoxic. The children have genetic variations, which interfere with the proper detoxification of those chemicals. With over 2,000 patients in the database, my paper is one of the largest studies to show that environmental factors interacting with associated genetic components may be contributing to the causation of autism.... "My report showed on average the amount of lead and mercury in the children's blood was 50 percent higher than normal. Their genetic changes (SNPs) were related to what is called Phase I and Phase II detoxification -- specifically the CYP and GST family of genes. This defect reduced the children's ability to remove excess toxins from their bodies.

"These autistic children also had a several fold higher level of bad gut bacteria and reduced levels of beneficial gut bacteria. Bad gut bacteria can produce neurotoxic amines and cause a "leaky gut" which allows toxic substances to more easily enter the circulatory system ..."

You may read the full clinical study here:

http://personalizedmedicine.posterous.com/environmental-factors-contributing-to-the-ons#

Chemically injured groups such as Gulf War vets and civilians who have become sensitized to neurotoxins, show the similar variations in the ability to detoxify.

Organized greed always defeats disorganized democracy.

4. If you have a child with Autism, you know it's not a humorous situation
And your name HiFructosePronSyrup reminded me that the INSTUTUTE FOR AGRICULTURE AND TRADE POLICY Press Release of January 26, 2009 reported that "nearly 50% of high fructose corn syrup is contaminated with mercury.

Much High Fructose Corn Syrup Contaminated With Mercury, New Study Finds

Brand-Name Food Products Also Discovered to Contain Mercury

Minneapolis – Mercury was found in nearly 50 percent of tested samples of commercial high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), according to a new article published today in the scientific journal, Environmental Health. A separate study by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) detected mercury in nearly one-third of 55 popular brand- name food and beverage products where HFCS is the first or second highest labeled ingredient—including products by Quaker, Hershey’s, Kraft and Smucker’s.

Some infant formula is almost 1/2 HFCS. Similac Go & Grow baby formula, for example, claims "Balanced nutrition for older babies", but the first ingredient is 42.6% corn syrup solids.

That said, I haven't hit alert.

I'd like everybody to see this crap for what it is. And who supports it.

41. I posted this to over 3,500 scientists, doctors, and researchers - they said "thank you".
So your ad hominem attack on the author of the study, calling him a "scum", is hardly worth considering.

I encourage everyone on DU to go to the Collaborative on Health and the Environment website.

CHE's website describes itself as "...an international partnership committed to strengthening the scientific and public dialogue on the impact of environmental factors on human health and catalyzing initiatives to address these concerns. CHE has been instrumental in leveraging mainstream health-affected constituencies in the environmental health science revolution and engaging researchers, health professionals, and environmental health and justice advocates from diverse sectors. Founded in 2002, CHE is an international partnership of over 3,500 individuals and organizations in 45 countries and 48 states, including scientists, health professionals, health-affected groups, nongovernmental organizations and other concerned citizens, committed to improving human and ecological health.

I have been a member since it's inception. CHE is meticulous in only allowing postings on its list serve that have merit.

There seems to be an effort to close down serious discussion by provoking people to react.

21. Chem / Pharm companies pay people to respond to GOOGLE Alerts on topics such as autism.
They are very much like the RWN lurkers. The sad fact is that 1 in 100 children now have autism, and 1 in 56 boys get it. That is an epidemic that cannot in any way be blamed on genetics. Genetics doesn't explain the epidemic, only novel exposures in our environment that did not exist 60 years ago.

Chem/ Pharm has spent billions to lie and manipulate the public and the congress. There are many hundreds of chem/pharm lobbyists in Washington D.C. I wonder how many there are on DU?

43. Science works by applying strong standards...
...for evidence, not by never, ever rendering judgment on what is and isn't good science. Crap research deserves to be treated as crap research. There's nothing that's "more scientific" about warmly embracing every crackpot idea that comes along on the outside chance that it's the one crackpot idea out of thousands that may surprisingly someday turn out to take a lot of people by surprise by being true.

If there's any truth to the OP, it's the job of the people pushing those ideas in the OP to weather the scorn of their scientific peers if their research isn't that convincing, even if they think their research is being "unfairly" rejected. This isn't an elementary school competition run by people excessively worried about self esteem where everyone gets praise and a ribbon just for trying.

Being scientific does not mean forever suspending judging on the outside chance that you might occasionally judge incorrectly.

And pretend it has meaning anywhere except in your fantasy world.

66. Is the television talking to you again?
You don't even bother reading what anyone says to you. You just reply to yourself.

As for me, it is for tonight. ;)

69. Both.
Are you sure you're done?

If so, maybe you can turn over a new leaf tomorrow. Bury your preconceived notions, and begin by exploring the basics of the scientific method.

Try it. It's good for you.

70. Off to ignore with you. But first I will close my end of this 'conversation' with the following.
Stop pretending that anyone who disagrees with you is pro-disease or doesn't understand the scientific method.

"Formaldehyde causes cancer, EPA declares" Not FRUIT, not pears, FORMALDEHYDE.

"An IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) working group categorized formaldehyde as a human carcinogen (Group 1) in 2004. A major component of the epidemiologic evidence evaluated by IARC to reach this decision was the analysis published by Hauptmann et al.

I doubt those who pick fruit have to worry about nasal cancer or leukemia, in spite of your "anti-fruit" crusade. ;)

I see you noted EHP above. I don't expect you to read this, but it's germane to the topic so I'm posting it regardless.

"New Thinking on Neurodevelopment ~ EHP"

Advocacy groups, such as SafeMinds, have suggested that the decades-long rise in the diagnosis of autism is related to the presence of thimerosal in vaccines. In May 2004, however, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued a report, Immunization Safety Review: Vaccines and Autism, stating that several epidemiological studies published since 2001 “consistently provided evidence of no association” between thimerosal-containing vaccines and autism. However, the IOM’s report has been severely criticized by a number of advocacy groups, including the National Autism Association, for relying too heavily on a specific set of epidemiologic data while dismissing clinical evidence and other epidemiologic studies that showed evidence of a link.

Despite the assurances of the IOM, some scientists continue to explore the mechanisms underlying the potential neurotoxic effects of thimerosal. In the January 2005 issue of NeuroToxicology, S. Jill James, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and her colleagues report that the neuronal and glial cell toxicity of methylmercury and ethylmercury (as dosed via thimerosal) are both mediated by the depletion of the antioxidant peptide glutathione. Of the two cell types, neurons were found to be particularly susceptible to ethylmercury-induced glutathione depletion and cell death, according to James, and pretreatment of the cells with glutathione reduced these effects. Other studies by James and her colleagues, reported in the December 2004 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, showed that autistic children had lower levels of glutathione compared to normal controls, and may therefore have had a significant reduction in the ability to detoxify reactive oxygen species.

James says the abnormal profile “suggests that these children may have an increased vulnerability to pro-oxidant environmental exposures and a lower threshold for oxidative neurotoxicity and immunotoxicity.”
Speaking at the XXII International Neurotoxicology Conference in September 2005, she presented evidence that multiple genetic polymorphisms affecting glutathione pathways may interact to produce a chronic metabolic imbalance that could contribute to the development and clinical symptoms of autism. Her paper in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that low glutathione levels in many autistic children were reversible with targeted nutritional intervention, but the ramifications of this finding are still unclear.

Be sure to reply with an insult and your go to "ROFLMAO!"

71. YEAH! I'm ON IGNORE!

So much for your chance to turn over a new leaf. Looks like you're going to ignore the scientific method forever.

As usual, you think you can throw a couple of links down and pretend they mean everything.

You enjoy ignoring the real world.

I am happy that you will not push your sick BS at me anymore.

You can make all the excuses you want, but you ignore the true picture, the whole picture, and you offer only tiny bit which supports your preconceived notions. You ignore all else.

AND YOU PUSH EVERY ANTI-VACCINE LINE OF CRAP OUT THERE. (Thus, your claim falls to the floor in pieces, yet again.)

ALL of the anti-vaccine maneuvers have been shown to be baseless. Apparently, you think repeating them, will make them valid.

Life doesn't work that way!

Good riddance.
