Is it okay to wear a heart monitor
Under an electric blanket?

I have to wear one tonight and the lectric blankie is my only source of heat besides a space heater. I don't feel safe leaving a space heater on at night while I sleep.

1. That is a good question. I would be worried about that also.
I hate leaving the heat on at night.

2. I would think so...
Do you mean like a normal heart rate monitor like the kind runners wear? If so, I doubt it would cause a problem, the blanket should not put out any interferance, and I would guess that if you body can stand whatever heat setting it is on, so could the monitor...

3. No this is one the doctor put me on
I have to wear it for 24 hours.

I guess I could put the electric blanket on top of my other blanket.

4. Electric blankets do put out inteference
as the elements switch on and off. Mine zaps my TV picture when it clicks. Likely the record will have those zaps on it, but it's not dangerous.

Is there any way you can sleep under a couple of coats tonight instead of the electric blanket? The interference may mask what they're trying to find.

It's not dangerous to you, but it will affect the data.

7. I would ask him then, if you cannot call him up...

use the blanket to warm up the bed tonight before you get in it, and then dress warmly for bed. If it is only for 24 hours, I would just try to get through the night without it if you are worried, it is only one night, though if you need to use it, I doubt it would harm you, but as someone else said it may interfer with the data, so tell your doctor about it if you end up using it.

on edit:
after looking at the posts below, it should be fine.

5. The blanket radiates the same EMR as the wiring in your house
(EMR = ElectroMagnetic Radiation)

We're all bathed in the power wiring voltage field whenever we're inside, and it's not known to be harmful. Sleeping under an electric blanket puts you in a bit closer proximity to a similar electric field. (We're subject to a lot of other EMR all the time, too, including radio waves, TV waves, stray waves from microwave appliances, cellphone waves, cordless phone and router waves, etc., etc. Not to forget the natural EMR called sunlight that comes in through the window.)

The HR monitor operates by picking up very tiny voltage changes on your skin caused when the heart muscle contracts in response to its own natural pacemaker. The monitor passively observes this voltage change; nothing "flows back" to the heart.

The energy field of the blanket is invisible to the heart rate monitor, and won't cause you or it any problems.

Peace.

6. You're fine ... I used to work in the Clinical Engineering dept ...
of a major medical center. You're wearing what was once called a "Holter monitor". It just records your EKG over time. In the past there was a cassette recorder on which the data was captured. These days the data is captured in solid-state memory.

Your recording device is perfectly safe ... your electric blanket won't affect your recorder or you. There's no way for a recording device to affect you ... it's just picking up the subtle signals from your heart. It will filter out the 60 cycle interference from you electric blanket and still provide a great recording of your heart while you sleep.

No need for alarm ... seriously

8. Thanks everyone
It was freakin cold last night so I used the blanket anyway.

On checking the messages this morning I am relieved by your comments.

This thing is a total drag (literally) to carry around. I suspect I know what a cow with a milking machine attached feels like. Minus the nipple drag.
