Don't Just Sit There! How bathroom posture affects your health.
I had never heard of such a concern.

That may sound like a bunch of Internet quackery, but there's now some empirical evidence for the claim that defecation posture affects your body. The more extreme assertions about squatting—that it prevents cancer, for example—remain untested. But when it comes to hemorrhoids—a painful swelling of the veins in the anal canal that affects half of all Americans—new research suggests that you may want to get your butt off the toilet.

1. I understand the Japanese used to have toilets that worked like this.
I think they've modernized since then though.

3. Squat toilets are impractical for old folks
Edited on Sat Sep-04-10 11:33 AM by Warpy
but having a step stool to drag up and rest one's feet on really does get the process moving a little more quickly. Just elevating the feet six inches off the floor can make a difference.

Figured that one out years ago.

The toilets that are still in evidence at old Roman baths were all sit toilets and not squat toilets. So if you want to blame poor bowel posture on anybody, I guess you'd have to start there.

4. Hah! Now I have a topic for my thesis.
How sit toilets destroyed the Roman Empire.

7. They were not only sit toilets
they were right out in the open, no sissy cubicles for our Romans. A trench of running water ran under them, probably discharging into the river everybody washed their clothing in. They not only did gang bathing, they did gang shitting.

11. Didn't the romans sit next to one another in the toilet areas?
I seem to remember reading about that when visiting Bath in England a few years ago. In fact, I think I saw rows of connecting -whats the word-, holes? They could discuss the days events, take care of business and generally enjoy the .....experience.

I always wondered when we bought this old house, why it had a 3 seater outhouse out back. I guess it was made so the family could sit and chat while attending to business. Quality family time??

Youch.

12. Cheek to cheek!
Sorry, couldn't resist. Yes, the stone seats were constructed remarkably like our own toilet seats, a slit in the front and a hole in the back. One imagines the literate Romans sitting there reading a scroll or discussing the news of the day with his nearest neighbors on the thrones.

People who had a culture based on animal power were well used to the stench of feces, urine and ammonia mixed together, so it wasn't that big a deal to them. Rural two holers aren't that much different because when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and it doesn't matter if somebody else got there first.

14. Wonderful, best laugh of the day!
Years ago when we were in England, my husband and I went to Bath. Quite amazing. The Romans were very friendly with one another. Incredible history in that little English town. Wish I could go back!!
