Obama is rope-a-doping the republican freaks with Sotomayor
Edited on Fri May-01-09 11:43 AM by BanTheGOP
While everyone in the media and even some progressives have been keen on getting 2nd Circuit Judge Sonia Sotomayor as the logical replacement for David Souter on the Supreme Court, I am not convinced that she is the best person for the job. Although she is female and is a minority, we should not be nominating someone that would have a proclivity for siding for business against legitimate government purposes time and time again.

In reviewing her career, she appears to be no more progressive than Souter. This is NOT ACCEPTABLE. We can NOT AFFORD a justice that can swing a vote as much as Kennedy, for instance. We need a consistently solid, progressive socialist on the court. In addition, we need a YOUNG justice, so we can guarantee half a century of court balance, until we are progressive enough to merge with the rest of the world in global jurisprudence.

I don't have any recommendations at this point, and I would rather not have to state any even if I did. But I DO know this: the Obama administration will have an UNPRECEDENTED, FILIBUSTER-PROOF SENATE to make his selection. In other words, there should be absolutely NO opposition to anyone President Obama selects. To that end, I don't see that Sotomayor is anything more than a smoke screen for Rahm Emmanuel and his team to vette out the TRUE judge. I have NO QUALMS WHATSOEVER that whomever is selected will DEFINITELY BE a very dynamic progressive socialist, perhaps even farther to the left, so that we can ensure that the third branch of government, the judiciary will remain firmly in our stead for decades.

Have you ever seen the Senate in action? Like, ever?

60 people with "D"s next to their name does not "no opposition" make. Not here in the real world.

5. We ARE the "Real World" now!!
I don't buy the fact that the democratic control of the senate is not of "The Real World". We are proving more and more that the republican political ideals are based on criminal, egregious policies which should be eliminated as soon as possible. ANY democrat or independent who sides with republicans should be scorned and exposed to excruciatingly painful political punishment.

We have 60 when Senator Franken takes his place. We should jump on this, and jump on it HARD, and get a progressive socialist confirmed...and fast!

6. You're all kinds of confusing, you know that?
Yes, with Franken "we" have 60.

But you appear to be completely ignoring that that "we" is composed of, for example, Specter. And Nelson. and Bayh.

Your rather absurd proclamation that none of those people could offer ANY opposition to ANY pick Obama would make, thus rendering his choice fillibuster proof, borders on the clinically delusional. It is completely divorced from reality. 60 people with "D"s next to their name are not 60 automatic votes for anything Obama wants. It dumbfounds me that that could possibly require explaining to anyone on this forum.

8. Well, we disagree...
...so let the selection process bring out who is more correct. I cannot believe the democrats will stifle anybody Rahm Emanuel recommends in any case. He's been brilliant in assisting President Obama get his legislation and message across, and I trust that a progressive will be selected.

2. You lost me at "socialist."
It's bad enough that they misuse that word, it's absolutely idiotic that our people do too.

4. I've never hidden MY desire for democratic socialism...
...and if you tracked back at my posting record, you will note that. If you are lost at not being able to understand what is at stake here, then I am saddened at the lack of commitment of the modern progressive.

7. Is it really a misuse of the word?
"Socialist" to me means, "socially-oriented," or upholds the collective interests of the people rather than the individual interest of the powerful and wealthy. In almost everywhere in the world, if we say "socialist," this is understood. I would like a socially-minded justice on the court, who recognizes the need to uphold the general welfare.
