A Question about CA immigration law
Some freeper todl me this...

"You know at present it's not legal to verify a prisoner's immigration status (at least in California it's not).  Some California jurisdictions are trying to pass legislation that would allow law enforcement to verify immigration status when a suspect is arrested for rape or robbery but no other crimes.  Even that effort has met with strong resistance from "immigrant rights" groups"

And yet I have never heard of this. My dad who lives in California has never heard of this (and he's a rabid right winger).

So is there any truth to this?

1. Bullshit.
If you're an immigrant, you are required to ALWAYS have your green card on your person. At ALL times.

If you're a citizen, then you're a citizen, and immigration doesn't come into it.

2. It's true
There is a proposal waiting on signatures.

Read here:
http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/elections_j.htm

It's farther down the page with this Sate Assembly number on it:
SA2005RF0099

Citizenship and Residency. Public Benefits and Services. Voting. Initiative Statute.
Summary Date: 11/23/05 Circulation Deadline: 04/24/06 Signatures Required: 373,816
Proponent: Mark Wyland

Prohibits individuals from receiving public health care or social services unless legal status is verified. Prohibits California colleges and universities from admitting individuals not authorized to be in United States. Limits voter eligibility to individuals who prove they are U.S. citizens, California resident and at least 18 years old. Requires DMV to issue California driver's licenses only to persons authorized to be in the United States. Provides that making or using false citizenship documents is a felony. Citizens may sue to enforce initiative, and officials may be liable for violations. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local governments: Program savings to the state and local governments due to reduced expenditures for certain public services. These savings could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Potentially costs in the tens of millions of dollars annually, to verify citizenship or immigration status of persons receiving public benefits. (SA2005RF0099.)

5. Maybe I'm the one not geting the OP's question
The SA Proposal is to require citizenship to be able to receive driver licenses, vote and to receive public assistance services. I know here in the San Joaquin there are illegal aliens who receive welfare and medical assist without US citzenship status. It's something many locals complain about often.

But, hey...I could be way wrong, way off track

6. not sure how this answers my question
becuase here you are citing a proposed law requiring that proof of citizenship be presented to get services.

But the person i am quoting claims that current california law FORBIDS asking fo rproof of citizenship.

Those are two different things.

3. That is just crap.
California may be immigrant heaven with full benefits, etc., but our ID laws are still intact.

There is talk, however, of building separate "correctional facilities" -prisons - for them because of the problems caused by Hispanic and Black prison gangs.

7. Immigrants to wear Yellow Stars for ease in ID.
It just might come to that. Remember Warsaw. We will never forget Poland.

10. Huge Immigration Rallies not covered by MSM
What gives? If the left could muster the turnout the immigration rally organizers had today (and tomorrow even bigger); they could make a comeback. Check it out: http://postanapology.blogspot.com/2006/04/immigration-rallies-not-covered-in-msm.html#links
