Dolly dear, sandman's near, you will soon be sleeping.

Anybody else remember this from John Thompson's TEACHING LITTLE FINGERS TO PLAY, a primer for piano students?

The words sound kind of sinister to me...

(Posted this to Lounge and no responses. I think next time I'm trying to decide between Lounge and Seniors, I'll go with Seniors.)

1. You're right. Sounds like a threat. We do
not want our dog Dolly put down.

it is a little sinister sounding, except my mother sang a lullaby with the sandman in it, that I sang to my children.

5. well, this lullaby my mother sang was sweet, and maybe if you had had your mother

singing it to you you would think differently, if your mother was sweet.

she missed a few of the original words, but probably because it was sung to her in the 20s, it is from 1899

3. Yah, I remember that, but it's not as sinister as this
poem which was cross-stitched and framed in two separate panels and hung on my bedroom wall as a child:

Panel 1

Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

Panel 2

Now I awake and see the light.
'Tis God who kept me through the night.
To Thee I lift my voice to pray.
That Thou will keep me through the day.

My grandmother made those and my parents, even though they were non-believers hung the damn things in my bedroom. I learned to read at age 4, and those words just plain scared the crap out of me for a couple of years. I finally got over that.

I told my parents a few years ago that those prayers had been very scary to a four-year-old child, and they said they had never really thought about that.

Pray to the Killer God or Die! That's what I learned from them. Fuck that shit!

6. I actually answered you in the lounge!
Although I do wish more people posted here in seniors--I seldom visit because it is so slow here.

7. Yes, thanks! I don't get how people tell what key something is in.

If anyone asked me that, they might as well as me to translate something into Chinese.

But I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEE music.

8. I used to have that!
Piano lessons were a drag. My mother and her family all learned to play by ear and they played wonderfully ~ also they played the harmonica and fiddle. My piano teacher would not let me play by ear, she wanted me to read the music. It kind of dampened my music ability, I think. I still LOVE music but cannot play a note myself now.
