New Orleans mould 'risks health'
Spores from mould growing in New Orleans homes flooded after Hurricane Katrina pose a major risk to health, a US environmental group has warned.

Air tests have shown levels of mould high enough to trigger serious allergic reactions in some people, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) says.

It accuses the government of doing too little to warn residents of the risk

The steamy climate in New Orleans and the fact that many homes were under water for days or weeks following Katrina has made it a fertile breeding ground for mould.

1. Hate to say it
but they're going to have to tear down a lot of those homes. I have firsthand lost a battle with black mold. Not cool. You can't get rid of mold once it starts.

2. I've had first-hand experience with a moldy home . . . it makes you
very ill. In my case, it affected my brain and my ability to concentrate and it contributed to an insidious depression that would go away when I got outside in fresh air for a few hours.

I worry about those people who are trying to clean up their homes and who are trying to live in them before they are stripped down to the frame and rebuilt.

3. yup my daughter had problems for months
then we found out her rooms wall had black mold growing up the wall and floor, 15,000 dollars to tear out the bathroom and her room walls, remove and contain the mold, and rebuild...best thing to do is bulldoze the houses and rebuild.
