Kansas professor says sorry for intelligent design email
Professor says sorry for intelligent design email

Associated Press in Kansas
Wednesday November 30, 2005
The Guardian

A University of Kansas professor apologised for an email that referred to religious conservatives as "fundies" and said a course describing intelligent design as mythology would be a "nice slap in their big fat face".

Prof Paul Mirecki's department has removed the reference to mythology in the course title and he said he would teach it "as a serious academic subject".

Intelligent design - the belief that a higher power created the universe - was added to the curriculum after the Kansas education board decided to include more criticism of evolution in science teaching.

1. Gee, I went to a religious college that taught Christianity as Mythology
seemed reasonable to me and is how many theologians look at all religion. Seems like the intellectually honest approach.

2. They sure got to him in a hurry.
Wasn't this story being trumpted the other day as an example of the "good" religionists prevailing over the talibornagains?

3. He's still teaching the course
And apologizing without consequences is the American way.

In the end, this course is how ID should be taught (if at all). Presented in the context of creation myths, it makes sense. Presented as an example in a philosophy class, it has value. In a course on American History or intellectual history, it could be informative.

In a biology class, it brings nothing.

4. oh ID should be taught all right
oh ID should be taught all right, in a course in "Politics, Religion, Media, and Public Cretinism".

But not science, because ID isn't science.

Oh wait, that course title encompasses way too much of the GOP agenda, and would take much too long to cover in class.
