Robot Demonstrates Self-Awareness
http://dsc.discovery.com/news/briefs/20051219/awarerobot_tec.html

Dec. 21, 2005— A new robot can recognize the difference between a mirror image of itself and another robot that looks just like it.

This so-called mirror image cognition is based on artificial nerve cell groups built into the robot's computer brain that give it the ability to recognize itself and acknowledge others.

The ground-breaking technology could eventually lead to robots able to express emotions.

Under development by Junichi Takeno and a team of researchers at Meiji University in Japan, the robot represents a big step toward developing self-aware robots and in understanding and modeling human self-consciousness.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Future.

1. In a related story . . . .
George W. Bush still walks into doors.

Sorry.

Fascinating story. Couldn't resist the comparison.

9. Five entries finished the DARPA autonomous over-land challenge this year
The previous year, none was even close. The recent rate of progress on autonomous robotics is both thrilling and a bit disturbing.

and the robots will boss us around. I'm not happy one little byte.

12. We've been hearing about this since Hal in "2001."
I'm not sure that self awareness is really just recognizing a picture. I'm skeptical on this one.

14. I agree with you there. Big difference between hard coding one learning...
technique and the vastly superior adaptive behavior my cat exhibits.

16. I agree.
Another misleading headline, but the story is still interesting.

Since you mention it, I'll include this link to one interpretion of the movie "2001 : A Space Odyssey" done in flash:
http://www.kubrick2001.com/index.html

It's 20 minutes long and may or may not send chills up one's spine.

17. I think the scientist's claim was made slightly tongue-in-cheek
Agreed, a robot programed to recognize itself in a mirror isn't really "self-awareness."

Now, if it was a behavior that emerged spontaneously, that might be a little different.

13. If we created sentient life, does that make us the gods themselves?
We are a pretty piss poor lot of dieties, unless the Greeks were right, and human foibles are just a reflection of cosmic hubris.

Just look at what the gods have visited on us in the form of our so-called leaders. Americans have sinned really big time to get Dubya, the President we deserve.

15. Since we don't understand
how the human conscious self and emotions work. I feel safe saying robotic emotions are just around the corner.
