RAW IMAGES!!! Heavenly bodies!! Click here!! (Cassini flyby of Titan)

The Cassini probe has made another close flyby of Saturn's cloud-shrouded moon, Titan. http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/home/index.cfm For some reason, the flyby page http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/news/events/titan20060227/index.cfm is not being updated yet, but raw images can be viewed at http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/multimedia/images/raw/index.cfm DIAL-UP WARNING: you probably do not want to link to the raw images page without a fast connection. There are many images on each page, even if they are smaller images than usual, and you have to flip through a few pages to get to the "interesting" ones.

These images are really raw -- need noise filtering, contrast enhancement, and labels -- but you may be the first to spot the alien base! (where survivors of the comet impactor fled)

6. You're thinking of Tethys...

(I posted this in the Lounge as "Feature on Saturn's moon Tethys named after Janet Jackson". It didn't even get a nibble.)

7. My daughter
who's a physicist, was on the Cassini launch team. Her two brothers are also in the space program. It always makes me smile when I think back to when they were all little and pretended to take bites out of the moon, which they called "the big cookie up in the sky."

Thanks for the photos and the links. :-)

8. Cool! My dad was in the space program until he retired.
Apollo 11 landed when I was 9 yrs old, watched it on a B/W TV.

I never went into that field myself, but have always found it fascinating, and wish it would get consistent budget support.
