'Mind over matter' no longer science fiction
http://www.physorg.com/news69039322.html

Sitting stone still under a skull cap fitted with a couple dozen electrodes, American scientist Peter Brunner stares at a laptop computer. Without so much as moving a nostril hair, he suddenly begins to compose a message -- letter by letter -- on a giant screen overhead.

"B-O-N-J-O-U-R" he writes with the power of his mind, much to the amazement of the largely French audience of scientists and curious onlookers gathered at the four-day European Research and Innovation Exhibition in Paris, which opened Thursday.

Brunner and two colleagues from the state-financed Wadsworth Center in Albany, New York were demonstrating a "brain computer interface (BCI)," an astounding technology which digitalizes brain signals emitted as electrical impulses -- picked up by the electrodes -- to convey intent.

While no spoons were bent, this was definitely mind over matter.

1. I've been able to use 'Mind over Matter' most of my life
I think to myself, "I'd like to raise my arm," and sure enough, my arm raises just because I thought about it!

Seriously, this technology, while cool, seem to be just to be a super-sensitive, 'pattern interpreting' encephelograph. -- along with a trained user, of course. A new application for somewhat older technological principles.

5. I Think He Cloned Himself Long Ago
and is able to continue on despite "popping"

in fact, that is probably why some days he seems stupider than he does other days.

That'll be one hell of a killer app.

The porn industry is waiting patiently.

6. What I'm afraid of is matter over mind.

Most technology tends to be a two way street...If we understand the physical forces behind thought well enough to read them well, when will be understand them well enough to influence them through similar technology...And won't I look like a dumbass then, having made fun of "tinfoil hatters" for so many years???

10. We have NOTHING to worry about
Mind over matter requires a mind in order to work properly...
we'll have NOOOO problems from the freepers in that regard.

(though it'll be funny watching em try... like Zod's sidekick in Superman...pfffft ... pfffft)

13. I heard about this a couple years ago
at the time, the technology had only advanced to the point that a user in a rig could navigate through some flying 3D rings on the screen.

Now they're up to letters.

Imagine driving your car by thought. Imagine driving reflexes as quick as thought.

Imagine typing on this forum by simply thinking the message at the machine. That's where they are- right now.

Good God, this is cool stuff.
