One giant blunder for mankind: how NASA lost moon pictures
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/one-giant-blunder-for-mankind/2006/08/04/1154198328978.html

THE heart-stopping moments when Neil Armstrong took his first tentative steps onto another world are defining images of the 20th century: grainy, fuzzy, unforgettable.

But just 37 years after Apollo 11, it is feared the magnetic tapes that recorded the first moon walk - beamed to the world via three tracking stations, including Parkes's famous "Dish" - have gone missing at NASA's Goddard Space Centre in Maryland.

A desperate search has begun amid concerns the tapes will disintegrate to dust before they can be found.

It is not widely known that the Apollo 11 television broadcast from the moon was a high-quality transmission, far sharper than the blurry version relayed instantly to the world on that July day in 1969.

Among those battling to unscramble the mystery is John Sarkissian, a CSIRO scientist stationed at Parkes for a decade. "We are working on the assumption they still exist," Mr Sarkissian told the Herald.

1. We don't seem to care about history unless it has to do with war.
It is inconceivable that those tapes could be lost. But I understand the Appollo 13 capsule was rescued from a French barn. Apparently they cared about it more than we did. An American found it by accident and it is now in Hutchingson Kansas. I am told the launchers at Cape Canaveral Fl. are rusting away.

6. don't believe that...
it's 'good versus evil'.... 'good' is the truth, evil is the lie, and that which promotes the lie. The Appollo program happened; tens/thousands ordinary people worked on it. It was a public funded program, as are all gov programs, but unlike many the moon program was by/for the people (president Kennedy had ordered NASA to do it during the pre nixon/regan/bush era) Book were written by various actors in the drama, and even by ultra rightwing white supremists like tom wolfe ie 'the right stuff') see 'Carrying the Fire' by Michael Collins, who was in the orbiter when Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the moon.....it's fashionable to question basic factual aspects of history in order to make denial an easily travelled river here and now, but that's just foxnews/cnn/nbc/abc/cbs/bbc/reuter/ap and so on ad nazism - evil is winning the war, btw, so saying glibly that the moon program was staged makes it easy for busheviks to refute the fact that 911 really was staged, the theft of the presidency was staged, the iraq war etc....
and who cares anyway? the fukkin human race is stupid, they elected hitler, they elected regan, they'd elect rush limbah-humbug given the chance.....they watch their own kids sold into slavery and say 'thank god it aint me'

7. Pathetic, I agree.
Why isn't this front page news of every newspaper in the country? Apparently it is more important to the Australians than to us...........

8. Hutchinson, not Hutchingson.
It's at the Kansas Consmosphere and Space Center. If you're in or near Hutchinson it might be worth a visit.

Maybe they'll find my Video-8 home movies -- these seem to
live in some sort of weird Schroedingeresque spacetime bubble
whereby they can only be found when no one wants to watch
them at that exact moment.
