X class solar flare

ANGRY SUNSPOT: Thomas Ashcraft knew something was up on Dec. 6th when a loud roar came out of the loudspeaker of his 22 MHz radio telescope in New Mexico: Sunspot 930 had exploded again. The X6-class flare sent shock waves billowing through the sun's atmosphere, producing among other things a Type II solar radio burst: listen.

In Los Angeles, California, Gary Palmer watched the explosion through his Coronado SolarMax90

3. I saw the aurora while heading to England last weekend

This is why I got a window seat!

On Dec. 2, I flew non-stop from Seattle to London. The flight left Seattle at 6:30 at night, so all but the last three hours of the 9.5 hour trip was in darkness. While over the Hudson Bay, I looked out the window at the clouds below, reflecting the light of the full moon. High above the clouds, off to the north, were two vast pale green curtains of light that slowly twisted. I watched them for half an hour before they faded.

One of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen.
