alternative to Wikipedia for astronomy
Edited on Fri Jul-25-08 11:58 AM by Bill McBlueState
I heard about the following today, which is being billed as a better alternative to Wikipedia for astronomical topics:

Encyclopedia of the Cosmos

You have to demonstrate some kind of credentials as an astronomer in order to edit it, so it's theoretically supposed to be more reliable than Wikipedia. I've just started poking around, so I have no real opinion of it yet.

Enjoy!

2. just checked the list of editors -- good people
as someone who works in the field, i recognize the names of most of them. Good people with solid research backgrounds. Mario Livio is particularly interesting. Thanks for the website.

4. I'm seeing a few familiar names, too
This should provide a way for astronomers who don't have the time to write a whole textbook to provide a few well-written articles in their specialty.

The Chinese mystic Lao-Tsu is one of the few direct creators of an ancient Creation story known to us directly by name. Lao-Tsu writes,

"There is a thing inherent and natural which existed before heaven and earth. Motionless and fathomless It stands alone and never changes. It pervades everything and is illimitable. It may be regarded as the source of the universe. I do not know what it is I call it Tao."

As a source of all being, Tao is itself beyond being. All existences in the universe sprang from Being, Being itself sprang from non-Being. Tao produces and nourishes all things by its own outflowing operation, and to it all things return. Also according to Lao-Tsu, Heaven never strives, and continues to be creative without effort or purpose.
