Huge waves spotted from space
The shady phenomenon of freak waves as tall as 10 storey buildings has finally been proved, the European Space Agency (Esa) said on Wednesday.

Sailors often whisper of monster waves when ships sink mysteriously but, until now, no one quite believed them.

As part of a project called MaxWave - which was set up to test the rumours - two Esa satellites surveyed the oceans.

During a three week period they detected 10 giant waves, all of which were over 25m (81ft) high.

3. They caught one on videotape whiling taping 'Deadliest Catch'
it damn near took the boat that hit to the bottom. All you see on the tape is a wall of water out of nowhere and then all hell breaks loose. Pretty remarkable, IMO.

16. "That was gnarley, dude!"
You get hit by a monster wave and all you can think of to say is, "That was gnarley, dude"?

I guess.

That's a common reaction to a sudden life threatening situation when your adrenaline has shot through the roof.

a swell, these waves are relatively thin as well as being very high, and have a trough in front of them - just in case the crash into the wave isn't enough to sink you!

Worse when the giant waves of air are invisible!

I keep my seatbelt buckled at all times and hope I'm not in the bathroom.

11. Back at you. I actually got to go for a ride on one outta Key West.
It was pretty damned cool.

Two of the Robin's sister ships are STILL in service with Taiwan. Evidently, they're in near mint condition:

Amazing that fleet boats designed for 20-30 service have doubled their lifespan, isn't it?

14. Check out CROAKER in Buffalo or REQUIN in Pittsburgh.
Some aspects of them are oddly over-engineered. Some, such as TORSK in Baltimore went to 800 feet and lived to tell!

19. I served on an FBM back in the 70's.
During some of the winter storms in the north Atlantic we were sucked up from 200 ft all the way to the surface by large waves. It didn't happen often but if we made a change in direction and got caught by one sideways it would pull us up. We were still rocked considerably by them even down to 400 ft.

18. holy sand dollars batman...
Nova (pbs) did a segment dealing with rogue waves, those in the field of quantum mechanics predicted these events but many in science brush their (QM) findings as nonsense. Math is the answer!
