NASA to Air Stephen Colbert Message on Eve of Shuttle Launch
NASA to Air Stephen Colbert Message on Eve of Shuttle Launch

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- NASA will broadcast a special message from comedian Stephen Colbert on Monday, Aug. 24, as the space shuttle Discovery prepares to deliver the COLBERT treadmill to the International Space Station.

The message will air on NASA Television after the shuttle's fueling commentary concludes at approximately 7:15 p.m. EDT.

The name Colbert received the most entries in NASA's online poll to name the station's Node 3 module, so NASA named its new space station treadmill the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill, or COLBERT. NASA named the module Tranquility.

Colbert, the host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," took an interest in the poll and urged his viewers to suggest his name, which received the most entries.

Discovery and its seven-member crew are set to launch at 1:36 a.m. EDT Tuesday, Aug. 25, on a 13-day mission to deliver scientific experiments, equipment and supplies to the station.

1. They should have names the module Colbert it received the most votes.
Don't open a poll to the public if you don't want to taake their advice. Amazingly hillarious that Colbert got he most votes, doesn't surprise me thought the Colbert nation is almost as big as the Bama nation.

2. They had rules at the outset about naming conventions. Colbert didn't fit.
But they were smart in naming something after him in the module. Free publicity goes both ways.

3. Colbert interviewed an astronaut who was on orbit in the ISS
It was a fun interview. The astronaut was wearing one of Stephen's "wrist-strong" bracelets, and had a great sense of humor. At one point Stephen asked him to scream, and the astronaut complied -- without pushing the "transmit" button on his mike. It was a great sight gag, and didn't require any follow-up joke. You either got it or you didn't, which is like a lot of Colbert's humor.

Colbert gives a lot of time to promote science. I don't know how many times he's had Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium, on under the guise of "challenging" him about the latest scientific findings. It's good to see someone who doesn't see science as a threat to their beliefs.
