Nasa prepares to bomb the moon
Source: Telegraph UK

Nasa scientists are preparing to launch a space mission from Cape Canaveral carrying a missile that will fire a hole deep in the surface of the moon.

The aim is to see whether any traces of water will be revealed by the disruption caused to the planet's surface.

Scientists expect the impact to blast out a huge cloud of dust, gas and vaporized water ice at least 6 miles high - making it visible from Earth.

If the search is successful it could provide vital supplies for a moonbase.

An accompanying spacecraft will orbit the moon for a year looking for possible landing sites for astronauts.

5. OMGZ why are we so violent???!!
Why are we spending so much money on weapons and violence in space? HAven't we destroyed enough pristine eco-systems already?! Why spend money on space weapons when we could be spending it to solve every problem on Earth?! Humans bring their horrible violence everywhere, even space!!!

9. What a misleading headline
There is no "bomb". There are NO explosives on board.

They're simply crashing a vehicle into the surface and looking for the debris that is thrown up.

11. Exactly
Pretty much the same as the Apollo S-IVBs (Saturn V third stage) were crashed into the Moon for seismic analysis.

12. Similar wording kicked up some glorious tantrums here a few months ago
Bunch of people who saw the word "bomb" and were rigidly convinced that meant we're nuking the moon or something, lots of very conscious decisions not to pay attention to anything else and just emote, emote, emote. It was kind of sad.

14. And I love these people who say "We're polluting the Universe now?"
I just hate to break it to them that we couldn't "pollute the Universe", even if we tried.

13. I have it on good authority, two former Secretaries of State, that Moonians are developing weapons
mass destruction.

A former President and his puppet master are convinced that we must strike the Moonians before they strike us, unless of course, there is no oil on the moon.
