3. I'm waiting for Betelgeuse to collapse and supernova-ize
It's shrunk some 15% since 1993, so it may already be http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17282-betelgeuse-the-incredible-shrinking-star.html">undergoing its pre-supernova collapse. At 500-600 l.y. distance, it will be the brightest such event in human history, outshining the full Moon for months. And it's quite possible to happen in the coming century.

5. I knew Betelgeuse was a possible incipient supernova..
I had no idea it was that close though.

The fundies will go absolutely nuts if and when that happens.

Thanks for posting that.

6. Charles Townes? Can't possibly be the same Charles Townes ... but it is!
Nobel Laureate for invention of the laser. I didn't even know for sure if he was still alive! Glad to see he's still doing science.

7. At a 500 to 600 light years distance it may have already gone supernova
It could have happened long ago and the light from the explosion is still on it's way.
