7 Cat Species Found in 1 Forest—A Record

Leopard Spotted

Caught by a camera trap, a leopard prowls under the dense canopy of the Jeypore-Dehing lowland rain forest in the northeast Indian state of Assam (map).

Released in February, the picture was taken during a two-year survey by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). The research found seven cat species in a 354-square-mile (570-square-kilometer) range—the highest diversity of cat species yet photographed in a single area.

Partly funded by WCS, wildlife biologist Kashmira Kakati had been studying the gibbons of Jeypore-Dehing and became curious about the predator tracks she kept finding on the ground.

"I said, I need to find out what's there," Kakati told National Geographic News. "Nobody had any clue. People who had been in the forest 30 years didn't know."

With 30 digital camera traps, Kakati captured not only the cats but a number of other rare forest animals between 2007 and 2009. "Even I was surprised by the result," she said.

2. The 2nd one looks like he's wearing an alligator coat.
And that third shot--why would any cat in a forest need such a ridiculously long and fuzzy tail?!

7. I'm bummed. I have only two species of cat in my home:
Felis butthangerus (the one who hangs his butt over the edge of the box when he pees) and Felis fattus (self-explanatory).

Biiiiiiiiiiiig Fuzzbutts!

I kind of miss having a fuzzbutt.....but my previous fuzzbutts were very bad. Had to pull up an entire rug and redo the floor....and my right snowboot still smells like catpiss.

11. To get the cat pee smell out
wash with Listerine. It may take a couple of times, but it works. It kills the bacteria that is causing the smell.

12. I'll try it!
Haaaa! Thanks!

I gave it the bleach treatment and that worked great for a pretty long time, but the smell came back. I wasn't expecting that...

I'll give the Listerine a try once the weather dries out a little (can't be without my heavy duty boots this time of year! )

:D

10. I have a felis moronicus
Also known as a Maine Coon. Stupidest cat on the planet. And HUGE! Mine is little more than a walking poop factory, designed by some vicious deity to bankrupt people with catfood bills.

Here she is as a young kitten:

14. Yah, I doubt it. She was a cute kitten.
Now, as a 25 lb. adult, her moronic nature has been fully developed.
