Tsunamis in Lake Tahoe?
Tsunamis Lay Await in Lake Tahoe
By Larry O'Hanlon

May 13, 2005— Faults hidden beneath the waves of one of the world's deepest lakes may occasionally trigger large quakes that could set 30-foot tsunamis sloshing mercilessly back and forth, according to a new study.

The tsunamis could happen without warning, flooding the shores of Lake Tahoe, with the largest wave-making quakes recurring every 3,000 years or so.

The discovery is part of an experiment, published in the current issue of Geology, that uses the latest technology to study signs of past earthquakes in submerged landscapes....cont'd

2. Would such a tsunami finally wash away the legacy of Joe King?

3. I got married there.
Just me and my wife, skiing and making love. It had to one of the best times in my life. After twenty years I still love that memory.

She was so gorgeous. I would not have survived had she been swept away by a Tsunami.

4. Or a quake could crack the plug and drain the lake entirely.
Most people don't realize what Lake Tahoe actually is. A couple million years ago the Lake Tahoe basin didn't exist. In it's place was an extremely deep river valley bounded by the high Sierras. When Mount Rose (a now extinct volcano at the mouth of the valley) erupted and its lava blocked the rivers path, the water backed up behind it and Lake Tahoe formed.

Geologically, there's no reason to believe that the "plug" couldn't be breached by a sufficiently massive earthquake, draining Tahoe forever and erasing Carson City and Reno from the map.
