If neanderthals were still around...
What would the laws be like? Assuming they are slightly less intelligent than homo sapians (their tools remained unchanged for 100,000 years), would we have to hire them if they applied for a job? Would they be able to marry sapians? Would killing one in an argument be flat out murder? Since they are clearly stronger than us, would they be able to play sports like football or fight in the UFC against humans? If they have separate leagues, would that be considered segregation?

Although I wish they were around, it would create lots of political issuations if they were.

2. They would just stick the thigh bone of a cave bear inside
the eyesocket of a cave bear skull and you would be dead. Discriminate all you want.

4. I think the Republicans should check their DNA
I am sure it will show some neanderthal blood in their veins.

5. I'm pretty sure they have a neanderthal brain inside of a homo sapien body
It would explain a lot

7. No, it wouldn't
Neanderthals had pretty large brains. On average larger than a modern H. Sapiens (by a few cubic centimeters, but still)

I dunno why people feel such a need to insult neanderthals by comparing htem to Republicans. Man, if I were a neanderthal, I would sniff so disdainfully at you.

8. yep. H. Sapien has been arouond for maybe a hundred thousand
years, but H Neandertalis was around for well over 250,000 years - that's a pretty successful species, if you ask me.

9. And H. erectus was hanging around for a million or so
Sad fact is, we're the last skinny twig on what has actually been a very successful group. And none of them were going out of their way to obliterate themselves like we are.

11. Brain size does not necessarily go with intelligence
It is how the brain is used. And neanderthals were not noted for adaptability or creativity.

6. You have a few flawed arguments
First, a lack if technological change doesn't mean they were less intelligent, even slightly, any more than Aborigines lacking the wheel or guns made them less intelligent. it simply means that the tools they had worked well enough for them, and the population was small and homogeneous enough that innovations weren't sweeping. There were periods of technological advance among the Neanderthals; After glaciation periods when isolated groups encountered one another again, each had developed its own ideas, traded, and built on them, creating a new tool culture. When H. sapiens came onto the scene, their technology filtered into neanderthal hands. Very slowly, but it was happening.

if neanderthals had survived, I think that modern humans would be a lot more tolerant. The world would be vastly different. The doctrines of human exceptionalism we have in most modern religions - and racial / national exceptionalism we see in national politics - would have a MUCH harder time coming into being if we could look around and see that our species wasn't the only human around.

16. Scientists are still unsure about this
Some say they are about equal, some say slightly less intelligent.

I certainly wish they were still around, but maybe it's just for the better that they are not. I can only imagine how bad discrimination would be like. :(

10. I seriously doubt H. sapiens would allow
H. neanderthale to survive. We have a very hard time accepting other H. sapiens, let alone a different humanoid competitor. JMO

12. Seems like they'd be pretty happy
with any job and to keep doing it over and over as lack of variability in their sites shows.

If we were around, we might just want to enslave them, rather than cohabit with them.

14. don't know
no easy answer to that question. All our nearest ancestors went extinct. That probably tells you something about if trying to compete in our ecological niche is/ or isn't a good thing.

15. I just want to know what the laws would be like
We all support equal rights, but that's because we're all equal. Since they are stronger, the issue of equality in sports would be huge. We would need PED's to keep up. I certain would support their right to marry sapians, but many would argue against it. I wonder what the Party Platforms would say.

19. I think what people are saying is
everything points to society having a very negative view of them. People for a long time refused to play integrated sports with people with the same genetic make up. It's really hard to imagine how society would have reacted to equal rights for something not human. People don't want dogs beaten, but they don't want them voting either. A non-homo sapien hominid in a world dominated by homo sapiens would probably face a hard life. We did apparently drive them all into extinction.

20. Well said, but one mistake
They were indeed human. A different species (or sub-species as some say), but 100% human.

21. sports require intelligence
and stronger doesn't necessarily equal faster or better endurance. Heavier bones might mean slower guys, so in football for example, you might have Neanderthal linemen but few Neanderthal QBs or WRs.

The reality is we don't know the intelligence level of them relative to us.

If they somehow made it to today, you'd have to assume a couple of things:

1. we'd reached some sort of accomodation with them over the centuries instead of killing them off
2. interbreeding did not occur in a volume significant enough to meld the species

I suspect racism amongst homo sapiens would still exist. We compare "lesser races" to monkeys, racists would simply change that to Neanderthal...so instead of Blacks are like monkeys, it would be Black's are like Neanderthals.

I'd think we'd either treat them as equals under the law today if their intelligence level was similar, or we'd treat them like we treat humans with low IQs. That's today, prior to today, I have no doubt there'd be a lot of exploitation/slavery.

ha, this would imply that they've retained what probably was incredible powers of scent.
something modern man has lost through civilization.
