The Stark Defect: A Case Study in Ideological Attacks on Science
In my latest post on The Liberal Avenger blog, I try to elucidate the significance of Nobel Laureate Johannes Stark's anti-semitic attacks on "Jewish science" during the heyday of the Nazi regime. I hope to start a discussion concerning such ideological attacks on Science.

"The Stark Defect":

If there had been any ambiguity in his stance on the "spirit of physics", it was eradicated by the time the Nazis had taken hold of Germany. Stark's essay in favor of Deutsche Physik, titled "The Pragmatic and the Dogmatic Spirit in Physics",2 appeared in the British journal Nature on April 30, 1938.

I am writing this in the wake of the President's latest comments on the federal funding of embryonic stem cell (ESCs) research. "I made it very clear to the Congress that the use of federal money, taxpayers' money to promote science which destroys life in order to save life is - I'm against that. And therefore, if the bill does that, I will veto it.'' Here we have George W. Bush, the leader of the Republican Party, forcing the scientific community into two ideological camps: those that wish to save life "by preserving it" and those wish the same by "destroying it".

Much more, including passages from Stark's writings.
