'Sarcasm' brain areas discovered

Or why we need the :sarcasm: icon:

'Sarcasm' brain areas discovered

Scientists say they have located the parts of the brain that comprehend sarcasm - honestly.

By comparing healthy people and those with damage to different parts of the brain, they found the front of the brain was a key to understanding irony.

Damage to any of three different areas could render individuals unable to understand sarcastic comments.

The Israeli team from Haifa University told Neuropsychology how their findings might help to explain autism features.

Cher

p.s. I heard the interview on the BBC and there was quite a discussion on how sarcasm is used extensively in the UK but not so much in the U.S. Yes, it is used in the major urban areas, but an American professor living in England said that sarcasm would be misinterpreted or misunderstood in the South and the Midwest. It would be interpreted as "aggressive."

26. Are sarcasm and irony related?
In both cases the desired inference is the complete opposite of what's on the surface.

In spoken language it can be verified with the tone of voice. Written sarcasm, or satire, can use hyperbole.

It's why the smiley has become so popular. A basic smiley indicates that the coversant is joking when it may not be clear from context.

4. Sarcasm is generally NOT understood
at all in the South or at least my part of it.

Sometimes people are so stupid they don't even realize they've been insulted. The most dangerous Southern male is one who is just savvy enough to realize he has been insulted on some level, but does not have the wits about him to engage in verbal repartee. That's when the violence ensues.

5. Interesting.
My grandson is diagnosed with mild autism, but he doesn't seem to have a problem with understanding sarcasm, at least face to face. Written sarcasm might be a bit more difficult. We come from a "sarcastic" family though, so he may have extra experience in learning about it. We use sarcasm in a more gentle, joking way, and he does seem to get it.

10. Conservative students at the university I went to could not understand me
At 18, I had this sarcastic way of expressing myself. I learned it from my teachers. Moving from a city where labor history was written to Indiana was quite a shock. Oh, to have those years over again.

12. I've noticed that too. that many people don't get it

I was raised with 2 sarcastic great aunts and a sarcastic mother. a most humorous and truth telling time.

I was once in a group of people where there was only one other sarcastic person. when he would say something sarcastic I would laugh and the others would just look at us and go on as if.

16. Mom used to buy us Mad Magazine so all the boys could read it
Actually, she didn't want one of my brothers buying it and keeping it from the others to tease us. But she used to say, "you will learn more reading Mad Magazine than I could ever teach you".

24. There is supposed to be a link between...
a well-developed sense of humor and intelligence.

I started reading Mad in the 3rd grade (pretty unusual for a girl at that time) and I'm sure that it helped me see the world in a more critical way. My kids have a subscription to it now.
