Studies Show Jews’ Genetic Similarity
A new study shows genetic similarity between Jews in different parts of the world, arguing against a purely cultural definition of Jewishness. On the other hand, Jews are very similar to Palestinians and Jordanians, also. which argues for a common ancestor for Arabs and Jews.

Please feel free to call me a fakakta mashugana. Mazel tov. L'chaim.

Jewish communities in Europe and the Middle East share many genes inherited from the ancestral Jewish population that lived in the Middle East some 3,000 years ago, even though each community also carries genes from other sources — usually the country in which it lives.

That is the conclusion of two new genetic surveys, the first to use genome-wide scanning devices to compare many Jewish communities around the world.

A major surprise from both surveys is the genetic closeness of the two Jewish communities of Europe, the Ashkenazim and the Sephardim. The Ashkenazim thrived in Northern and Eastern Europe until their devastation by the Hitler regime, and now live mostly in the United States and Israel. The Sephardim were exiled from Spain in 1492 and from Portugal in 1497 and moved to the Ottoman Empire, North Africa and the Netherlands.

The two genome surveys extend earlier studies based just on the Y chromosome, the genetic element carried by all men. They refute the suggestion made last year by the historian Shlomo Sand in his book “The Invention of the Jewish People” that Jews have no common origin but are a miscellany of people in Europe and Central Asia who converted to Judaism at various times.

2. Have you been patronizing white supremacist sites?
Indirectly or not -- yes, you have.

There are no "Khazars" now, BTW.

4. Good luck with that.
Apparently DU is now less tolerant of moderate bitching about President Obama than it is of Aryan Nation racial fantasies like "the Khazar theory."

12. I didn't know that white supremacists had adopted the Khazar theory
The first time I came across it, years ago, was in a book by Arthur Koestler. The 13th Tribe, I think.

I thought it was odd but interesting. Why would Aryan Nation types care one way or the other about that idea?

13. I read Koestler's book years ago and thought it made for
interesting history. It explained a few puzzling things but of course it is only one of various theories. There is a small library of books on "The Lost Tribes" for instance.

it does not justify their world view.

8. The cool one they found in that African tribe
That claimed to be what the DNA proved they were? Oh, what journeys humans have taken.

Now I want them to test anyone in South America who claims pochteca descent. I would put money on that same bunch of genes showing up.

9. Jews have been inbreeding for a long time
This is why Jews have so many genetic factors for rare diseases, which should tell people that yes, Jewish people are an ethnic group as well as a religious group. I myself have a rare disorder of whom the only group that has a genetic disposition for it is Ashkenazi Jews (of which I am)
