Huge digital image of the Moon released
From LRO images taken in December.

That's the little one. The big one is twenty times bigger (in both dimensions).

There's an interactive zoom-able pan-able mosaic here:
http://wms.lroc.asu.edu/lroc_browse/view/wac_nearside

The source file mosaic is there and available for downloading but be be forewarned that it's 550MB!

6. I was going to suggest a contest on who can find a manmade object first.
Then I saw the resolution was 145 meters per pixel. Oh well. :(

11. The moon is so close and that's the best we can do 145?
Edited on Wed Feb-23-11 01:53 PM by Ichingcarpenter
..... I've been searching for something around 5 meters per pixel or less.

You would think with all the new satellites, moon explorations and telescopes

I could find something better

12. The LRO can image down to about 0.5 meters per pixel
For example:

This was just a full-moon mosaic that the LRO team put together. Sorry you were disappointed.

14. the mosaic I linked doesn't go down to 0.5m
but the LRO camera (used to put together the mosaic) is capable of 0.5m resolution. They just probably haven't imaged the entire surface to that degree yet instead concentrating of targets of interest.
