Check out this botched science article about near-Earth asteroids.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2393843,00.asp

New data from NASA's NEOWISE mission suggests that there are fewer massive asteroids orbiting the Earth than scientists had originally estimated, but we're far from closing the book on asteroid research.

Scientists now believe there are 981 large, near-Earth asteroids about the size of a small mountain orbiting Earth, down from an original estimate of 1,000. Of that, 911 asteroids have already been found, meaning researchers can keep an eye on them and warn people on the ground should there be any chance of a collision on Earth. That's a very small chance, by the way; NASA said "none of them represents a threat to Earth in the next few centuries."

"It is believed that all near-Earth asteroids approximately 6 miles (10 kilometers) across, as big as the one thought to have wiped out the dinosaurs, have been found," NASA said.

I believe the author really meant "orbiting the Sun", not "orbiting the Earth."

1. And just what is the origin of that belief, Towlie? nt

edit: I focked up! I've seen so much recent news about man-made earth-orbiting junk, I was thinking(if you can call it that) this article was about those.
