Egyptian ad urges women to "cover themselves" to prevent rape (can anyone translate from Arabic?)

h/t PZ Myers:

Myers responds:

I don't know who should feel more offended, the women who are compared to a piece of candy or the men who are compared to flies. I do know who should feel more threatened, though: the women who are seeing men promoted as being unable to resist temptation.

I agree with Myers. This ad is disgusting apologetics for the uber-patriarchal society that religious conservatives love in which women must submit to men at all times.

Oh wait, I've heard that women should avoid getting married if they don't want to get rape! Phyllis Schlafly infamously said in 2007: "By getting married, the woman has consented to sex, and I don't think you can call it rape."

(on edit) Imagine the backlash if an American college campus posted flyers urging female students to "stop dressing like sluts" instead of urging men to control themselves.

1. Rape is not about physical attraction. Rape is about violence and power.
I agree with Myers.

This is one reason I will never visit these types of countries no matter how much I would like to.

4. Why don't they urge men to curb their
aggressiveness. That's what leads to rape. The need to control.

5. I've heard that a similar analogy
is used in the FLDS, and in the LDS, for that matter, to promote acceptable behavior to qualify for male ownership transfer of virgin from father to new owner.

:puke:

As for what I think of any male who subscribes to these types of cultures:

It is Egyptian Arabic slang not Formal Arabic

You cant prevent them
but you can protect yourself
Who created you, knows what is good for you

This ad is from the disgusting very religious groups blaming women for every thing bad and because there are discussions about laws to prevent molestation. I hate those groups SOOOOO MUCHHHHHHH grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

7. Something similar was handed out in Virgina a few months ago
Blame the victim: Religious leaflet claims ‘ungodly’ dressed women provoke rape
http://www2.tricities.com/tri/news/local/article/blame_the_victim_religious_leaflet_claims_ungodly_dressed_women_provoke_rap/42253/

Nineteen-year-old Keshia Canter handed three burgers, fries and milkshakes to a car-load of Tuesday afternoon customers at the Hi-Lo Burger’s drive-though window. A lady sitting in the backseat leaned forward, between the two men in front, and handed her a leaflet: “Women & Girls” it said across the top.

“Even though nothing is showing, you’re being ungodly,” Canter recalled the woman telling her. “You make men want to be sinful.”

snip

“You may have been given this leaflet because of the way you are dressed,” it begins. “Have you thought about standing before the true and living God to be judged?”

It continues with one essential theme: The sins of men are, in part, the fault of women, specifically women in tight-fitting clothing. Yates was annoyed. Then she got to a section on page two:

“Scripture tells us that when a man looks on a woman to lust for her he has already committed adultery in his heart. If you are dressed in a way that tempts a men to do this secret (or not so secret) sin, you are a participant in the sin,” the leaflet states. “By the way, some rape victims would not have been raped if they had dressed properly. So can we really say they were innocent victims?”

followers of Bill Gothard (among whome are the Duggar's http://open.salon.com/blog/nlq/2010/03/08/are_jim_bob_michelle_duggar_quiverfull , Mike Huckabee http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/1/19/175629/012/188/439174 , & Ken Blackwell http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/1/30/135025/272 ) seem to be of the mind that immodest women sexually abuse men - see http://books.google.com/books?id=GTzG06dEgxAC&lpg=PA45&ots=EECRtn_44v&dq=gothard%20defraud&pg=PA45#v=onepage&q=gothard%20defraud&f=false

I am not sure which branch of christianity this group attaches to but I came across this org the other day Pure Fashion http://www.purefashion.com/faq who while aren't threatening girls with the possibility of rape for dressing immodestly still hint at it some danger - What message does modesty send?

Dressing modestly helps a young woman to be pure of heart, as well as helps the young boys or men with whom she comes in contact, to remain pure of heart. As scripture tells us, "Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God." Matthew 5:8

It reminds me of the one epsidoe of Bevis and Butthead I ever watched where they went to court against a girl for sexually harassing them by being 'hot'.

with any group like this it is about controlling women and making them responsible for others behavior, never anything about telling men they are responsible for their own actions. Also this presumes not just that men are incapable of self control but that they desire to rape any female they find attractive instead of desiring a consensual relationship.
