Saw a great documentary on PBS last nigth

"Sisters in Law" is about women judges in Cameroon challenging social traditions that regard women and children as property. It follows four actual cases, two of wife beating, one of child rape, and another in which a 6-year-old orphan was treated as a domestic slave and severely beaten by her aunt and cousin.

What's fascinating (and creepy) about these cases is that the abusers use exactly the same excuses that we hear in this country: "The little girl came to my house looking for sex." "My wife was out of control." "I have a right to do what I want in my own home." "Of course I beat her. I told her to do her chores and she went and watched television."

It's also fascinating to see what quivering cowards the abusers turn into when they are found guilty and sentenced.

Check your local PBS station, because it's one of the features on Independent Lens this week.
