Two stories
From the veteran's forum:

Two airmen stationed at Robins Air Force Base, Ga., who were caught traveling with 45 pounds of marijuana in Illinois last spring, pleaded guilty to drug charges in court Tuesday, The State Journal Register reports.

Kyle, who came up with a plan to traffic the pot from Arizona to Chicago according to the report, was sentenced to eight years in confinement and Williams was sentenced to six years in confinement.

From Dallas:

FRISCO - Outrage has surfaced after a Collin County jury sentenced a Frisco teenager to probation after he raped a woman at gunpoint in front of her own children.

2. I can't access the first one
The second one is just horrid. If the kid is already that violent, probation will be seen as by him as beating the system and very good for a very damaged ego, and nothing, absolutely nothing will be able to prevent future crimes. Almost a given he'll re offend.

The effect of this on the victim's I can't even begin to fathom.

3. oops, fixing the link
http://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2008/02/airforce_pot_bust_0220/

The slash at the end got stuck outside the html code, I think that's the problem.

The second story ... people wonder why so many women don't bother to report rape. This is a perfect demonstration. All that time being put on trial for being a victim, and in the end (if they even have a trial) odds are nothing will really happen to the guy anyway. It's just another assault on the woman. I don't know a single person whose rapist has gotten jail time, and I know several who have gone to trial, some have even won their cases. But no prison terms.

I can't imagine what was in the heads of the jurors.

5. So...It's a crime to possess pot - gets you a few years but...
...to rape a woman at gunpoint in front of her own kids? Well. THAT'S not so bad. Run along boy, have yourself a good time.

Pffffft!
