What happened to Unturkey?
I really liked it, and it seems to be gone. It was a 'Now & Zen' product--is it gone for good?

Man, Tofurkey is nowhere near as good.

I guess it's back to nutloaves for holidays. Crap.

1. Try Quorn.
My daughter and I love it.

Last year I made the Quorn _"turkey roast"_ with all the traditional sides -- even Grandma's "sausage" and apple stuffing with a soy-based substitute -- and it was delicious.

Cook it moist, and I think you could probably fool even a die-hard carnivore into thinking it was turkey.

3. My husband really likes that one.
It's not really for me (it's got egg in it) but that's what the rest of his family likes, too.

So, neat--it sounds like you really nailed a traditional holiday meal. I've yet to try sausage subs. Maybe I'll get brave.

Happy Thanksgiving!

20. Right... I forgot about the egg.
My understanding is that they use the egg whites as a binder.

24. Well, even if the Quorn's not right for me
it's what the three O-L vegetarians in my husband's family like for holidays. I think it's nice for them to have a 'main dish' kind of thing that they can share and still feel like they are part of the sort of traditional thing.

I really liked the UnTurkey, and was hoping to get them on board with that. But now it's gone! Gaah!

19. We looked at several Quorn products...
They all looked delicious. Sadly none seemed vegan so we were left bereft.

21. Yes, I'm sorry.
I'm sure they've been asked many times to find a substitute for the egg whites, so I'm hoping that as soon as they find an adequate one, they'll go vegan.

Won't THAT be a happy day?

26. I got to eat at the Now & Zen restaurant several times.
Amazing food, and a funky little restaurant, too. I wish I'd gone more often while it was still open and I lived only a few blocks away in SF.

:(

15. I love that stuff.
But I got so annoyed after so many cans ended up being defective that I stopped buying it. I thought it was just me, but I've read it on a bunch of other blogs too.

18. Nope, you're dead right.
I've bought cans of it that I get maybe 1/4 of what I expect out of it. Still goop inside, but no gas.

25. ...BUT here's the recipe to make your own UnTurkey!
This has been blessed by Miyoko Schinner, the head chef of Now & Zen:
http://unturkey.org/

The company to whom she sold the rights to make the UnTurkey went out of business, and her cookbook is out of print, so enjoy as best you can.

:)

6. I can't vouch for this one on PETA's site (though I did sign up to win one):
http://www.peta.org/feat-newveganturkey.asp

I'm kind of curious about it, though. We tried a brown rice-stuffed tofu recipe a few weeks ago that was pretty disastrous, so we were looking at some other options. In the end, though, we're going to my parents and I'm having a slew of roasted veggies, mashed potatoes and mashed sweet potatoes, and that's okay with me. :)

7. Hm, a new contender.
I suppose I can schlep up to WF to check it out. (It looks like there will actually be one opening in WSeattle soon...I don't know if that's going to be good or bad!)

I don't know if we'll try it on T-giving without having tested it out. I guess I'd better start figuring it out fast!

Have a great one!

13. I have asked my HFS to special order these field roasts,
http://www.fieldroast.com/products.htm

but they will not be in time for T-day. I've ordered the Lentil Sage & Wild Mushroom. I'll report back when I try them.

The tofurky loaf was ok, but not great. The second time I made it, I greased the outside with Earth Balance & it got crispy & was much better. For as good as their smoked deli slices are, the loaf leaves a bit to be desired.

I do like a good lentil/nut loaf! Sorry you'll be cooking from scratch!

14. I've had just about every Field Roast product.
I love all of them, although I think the chipotle ones are too spicy (even for me and I love spicy food). Sounds like a yummy idea. :)

16. I would really like to try the Porcini Dijon Cutlet
http://www.fieldroast.com/products.htm

But it's listed under "Food Service" so I'm not sure a retail store can get them. Have you found them & tried them?

I think when I was in the hospital once I may have had that or something similar and it was good. :)

17. I eat the Celebration Loaf once a week or so.
For $7, it's awesome and at least 2.5 meals for my big ass.

I bake it with an apricot glaze, and sometimes make a little gravy on the side.

27. I never see the need for a turkey substitute.
There are so many other good, veg*n foods that are traditional for Thanksgiving--corn, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberries, squash, pumpkin, apple pie. I had a great Thanksgiving meal, and just avoided the turkey, gravy, and stuffing. I didn't miss it at all. And believe me, I was stuffed!
