I had meat in my mouth yesterday....stupid restaurant!
We've got a restaurant here that has a very nice vegan selection on their menu. Last night we ordered the Vegan Chicken Fried Steak (Seitan). Have had it before and it's excellent.

Last night Paul brought it home and we cut it to share it. I cut the first piece and put it in my mouth when I realized it was not seitan, but actual steak. I spit it out and made Paul call the restaurant. The bartender who took the order (and has had taken our order several times) apologized profusely and admitted that he rang the ticket wrong. He asked if we had gotten sick (not sarcastic) and we told him no. They remade the vegan chicken fried seitan and all was right with the world. Except it peeves me greatly that I have not had meat in my mouth for 20 years and they broke my streak on steak.

(Sorry, had to vent.)

1. Bleh!
I wish I could say I've avoided it, but it's happened to me far more often than I'd like. Luckily, it's pretty easy to spot that particular chewy texture quickly. :(

At least the restaurant was apologetic. I've had a server laugh at me and say, "so?" when I complained that someone slipped bacon into my vegan scramble. :grr:

2. At least you figured it out in time. That would suck.
I've been totally vegan now for just over a month and it's been an absolute miracle for me. I was about to make my own post, but I saw yours first and had to stop in to commiserate.

4. I'll
wait for your OP to congratulate you, so I'm not duplicitous. :)

I'd like to hear about how it's been a miracle for you. Love the good vegan stories.

3. Disgusting. I trust the bartender sounded sincere
I think your streak is fine. It wasn't your intent and you didn't consume it. No asterisk in the World Vegan Directory for you. ;)

5. Yeah, he was definitely sincere...
I work in food service and I know how mistakes can be made. It's unfortunate, but the place is usually very busy and I can understand how it happened.

6. Shit I hate when that happens!

You try so hard to avoid the stuff, make all the right choices and yet you get the meat whammy. :( Man, that first chew and the lightening bolt realization that it is the real deal in your mouth is simply stomach churning. :puke:

Had that happen at Chili's a few months ago when I ordered some nachos -- had no idea that there was bits of ground beef in/on the cheese -- it was a kinda dark in there and I wasn't wearing my glasses when they arrived. That first mouthful -- bleck!!!

7. I know just how you feel.
I got a beef burrito instead of a bean burrito once & I couldn't get it out of my mouth fast enough.

8. Yuck!! I hate it when that kind of thing happens.
Although I figure that ethically, since it's accidental there is no violation, it still grosses me the fsck out to think I had a piece of dead animal in my mouth (or worse, that I swallowed some before realizing what it was).
