4. I've been a veggie since 1993.
Hey Mike! Thanks for the tip off! I missed the original thread about this and I'm so set in my ways on what forums I visit that it probably would have taken me 6 months to discover it ;-) You're a pal :-)

7. Been on my veg path since '86 & haven't looked back!
Mostly vegan, although corporate/social events are my downfall. However, got just about all of P&G out of my house! (Vicks vaporub is the last thing to go, but it helps my husband during allergy season.)

Great idea to have this sub-forum!!!

8. Big respect for those that have been
Veg* for many, many years. It's gotten so much easier. I went vegetarian 5 years ago, vegan 4 years ago. I've never, nor will ever, look back.

Great forum! Thanks.

especially for newbie veggies like me! :bounce: I became a veggie about 2 years ago, or so, when I started volunteering for the Michigan Humane Society.

14. Thanks, and you're more than welcome!
Have you ever tried broccolini? I brought that with me one year and even the non-veg lovers ate it. I was going to bring it with me again this year, but the weather was so bad last night that I skipped my planned trip to the grocery store. Last year, I made a cauliflower bake and nobody ate it but me. *sigh* Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving and welcome to DU!:hi:

15. never tried broccolini
what is it? A boccoli dish or a hybrid veggie? I just got a Magic Bullet and I'm excited to make instant hummus in it. I'm tired of trying to use my blender to make smoothies for breakfast, too, so this thing is going to be a lifesaver.

16. I just love broccoli, but broccolini doesn't require as much peeling
Many people think that it's related to asparagus, which isn't my favorite, but it's actually a cross between broccoli and kale, the latter containing lots of iron. It tastes like a milder broccoli. If I can find it the produce section of the larger supermarkets in my small town, it's got to be readily available. Also, have you ever tried broccoflower? That's a cross between broccoli and cauliflower. It looks like green cauliflower and is also really easy to prepare. I generally steam them in salted water in the microwave.:-)

I am not familiar with the Magic Bullet, but it sounds pretty amazing. Should I ask for one for Christmas?

17. broccoflower
I've had- it works very well on veggie pizzas although I haven't seen it around for a few years. I'm getting funny about genetic engineering in produce. LOL- I might not feel that way if we didn't have the current administration. I'm getting paranoid about everything lately.

The magic bullet is the most amazing appliance I've ever had. I guess there's an infomercial, which I've never seen, as I don't watch all that much tv. My cousins had one of these things, and I couldn't believe it. They were showing us what it could do, and it was actually easy. It has a blender/juicer attachment, so you can make fresh juice, in single servings if you want. It makes amazing smoothies, too. Everything kind of fits together. My cousin ordered it for me, but someone told me they have them at Target now. I'm not sure if that includes all the extras or not I haven't seen it in a store yet. It's worth checking out, anyway.

It's called "Magic Bullet" but check to make sure it has all the attachments. The blender/juicer thing isn't part of the main machine.

It's this little unit, and you put the cups on top of it, depending on what you're making. You can chop stuff with it, and do smoothies, etc. It workes great, and is very easy. Let me know if you find it (but I hope you're not shopping today because of the boycott):)

21. It chops, as well?! I could use something that does that
My favorite recipe, ever, is for a vegetarian pasta sauce, which contains cups and cups of diced veggies. I haven't made it in ages, because it is so labor intensive. I usually spend one evening chopping and make it the next day. I've yet to find a chopper that does it as well as I do, by hand.

What are we boycotting? I didn't shop, today, since it's normally insane out there on the day after Thanksgiving, but I didn't know that we weren't supposed to.

20. I know what you mean about genetic engineering
It totally creeps me out, as well, and I also agree that we have a lot to fear from the worst president on the environment, ever. I would believe anything of the current administration. But, with broccolini or broccoflower, they are just new and somewhat different vegetables, and not like they contain fish genes or some of the other creepy things that you hear about.
:scared:

This sounds like an interesting appliance. I'll check it out. They're building a Target just down the road from me and there's also one right next to where I take my dogs to the vet.:-)

22. I picked up on the Boycott from the
Economic activism group here at DU. They are planning a progressive living movement including a boycott on the top 100 GOP supporting companies. The Day after Thanksgiving Boycott is a general strike against what corporations have become, I think.

I have a small (just me) home business, and I didn't sell today either. I just thought it was appropriate, and my customers were curious, so I got to share my liberal views. Not all of them were receptive, but at least they know I mean business-even if it means no business.:)

I'll keep looking for broccolini and broccoflower.

23. Thank you! I figured that it was something like that.

That is one group I haven't joined, but I'll take a look at it. That sounds like a great idea! I recently got to know a local DUer who is an economist and she's really opened my eyes about how bad things truly are in this country!
:scared:

I guess Wal-Mart falls into this category, LOL! I never would have learned about them, if it wasn't for DU. I had to laugh, since the person who turned me on to DU had a birthday, recently, and his parents gave him a gift card for Wal-Mart! At first I made a joke, asking if it was for Wal-Mart, since he won't go there, but it turned out that was what it was for!:-)

I found broccolini at Price Chopper, but we have one of the really big ones. Are they on the list? I find that they have the best and most varied selection of produce of any of the stores that I have access to.

That's totally cool that you got to share your views, but I hope that it doesn't hurt your business. I live in a red district, though my friends are also liberal. I was surprised, however, when I began wearing my Kerry campaign buttons, when people I barely knew started coming up to me and said that they agreed or wanted to share their dislike of Bush* or their anger about the war in Iraq. It's like they had these feelings all bottled up and were relieved that they had found somebody else who agreed with them. The same thing happened when I went to see "F 9/11." The woman sitting next to me, who was a perfect stranger, started ranting to me about Bush* before the movie even started! She already subscribes to MoveOn, so I recommended DU and Truthout and told her how to access Air America, which she was really excited about! I only had one bad experience, when a Freeper accosted me in the parking lot outside PetsMart (next to Target, LOL!) where I had just taken my dogs to the vet. He went through the whole list of the empty Bush* talking points and I just burst out laughing, because my vet shares my political views and we had just been laughing about the idiotic and nonsensical things that the Bush* campaign was saying!:D

24. I'm still trying to figure out the list
of what to and what not to. I know Wal-mart is bad news though. There are some links on the posts in the other group, but they haven't compiled a master list yet.

I encountered some hostility when I was campaigning for John Kerry, but our county somehow voted blue. Well, for president anyway. I didn't have a whole lot of strangers appproach me, except to say things I won't repeat here. You know how the religious right are.

It amazes me that these people call themselves pro-life and they have slaughtered animals on their plate daily. I can't figure that out.

25. I'll have to check it out when they compile the list
Though it wouldn't hurt to check out what they already have.:-)

I'm sorry that you were harassed. One thing that you can tell the so-called "pro-life" people is that the abortion rate has risen dramatically, under Bush*, after a steady decline over the previous ten years. I was told this, and don't have a link, but I could easily find one. It seems obvious that, in this disastrous economy, people are less willing to take on children that they can't afford to raise.;(
