Grand Theft Canine (pic heavy)
flvegan has a photobucket account now. That means pix.

As you may recall, I run a rescue for abused animals. My motto for it is "Rescue, Recovery and Rehab" with the "recovery" portion meaning something more along the lines of the tow truck variety (repossession).

So anyway...area veterinarian calls us about this family that has two female dogs that they had bred to try to make some cash by selling the pups. They were both too young, and the litters failed. Tried again. Same result. So, the family decided the poor mother dogs didn't deserve any consideration as they were failed cash cows. That's when the feeding stopped.

This girl, F, was the worst.

She lived in squalor. Animal Services said that she wasn't in bad enough shape (the vet called them first, and called us when they failed to help her). You decide:

I cut that damn chain myself, and my partner and I took her out of there in broad daylight. Open rescue rules.

When I was leaving with her, I saw this:

Failed mama #2, L. Skinny. No food, water, blanket, toys...nothing. She was on a 3 foot leash. A leash! That was her life. I saw that face, that look, and I promised her that I'd come back. I dropped my partner and dog #1 off and I went back alone for her...

Both dogs are very, very happy and healthy in new Forever homes. I think about them often. According to some, my actions on that day make me a...well, nevermind.

This is me and F, 45 minutes after cutting her chain, sitting on the floor of the emergency vet office (a DU first for me...a pic):

You can see that she just longed for attention.

Just thought I'd share.

1. Good for you!
How can people mistreat animals that way I will never understand.

You are a good person for what you do. :toast:

2. I saw so much of this working at our vet office.
I know there must be some ethical breeders out there, but I haven't met any. All I saw were people treating their dogs like puppy mills. And if a puppy was too young to make it, it wasn't cost efficient to try and save it if it were a common breed like a rottie or a lab, so just let it die.

When I first got my lab, she was really really thin and malnourished. She was a year old and she only weighed 35 pounds. Anyway, I was walking her and it sickened me how many serious people told me she was a good-looking dog.

At the vet, I saw a lot of people purposely starve their dogs, especially pits, to get that "lean" look. I remember specifically a bully named Carmine whose owners should have been locked up.

I'm never going to make any money as a vet...no tail docks, no ear crops, no declaws...and I'll probably piss a lot of owners off, but oh well, screw those clowns.

3. You'll be very successful, actually.
As a vet, with compassion, the word of mouth you'll generate will pay you back. Your name will be on the lips of rescuers and AR folks all over your area. You'll be a natural choice.

5. Thanks, flvegan
for posting those pictures - both of our dogs have come from shelters, and I love a happy ending. And thank you for the work you do. People like you make me feel a little less guilty about being human.

6. You're my hero.
I've been addicted to watching Animal Cops and Animal Precinct for over a month now, because of stories like this. It's hard to see all the suffering but there's a happy ending enough times (on the show at least) that it brings me some solace.

It seems like there's a starving dog or two on every show. I remember a Satya article recently (I think it was the issue you linked to) where an animal expert said the problem they see most often is starving dogs. I just can't imagine starving an animal. If you get one you have to take the time and spend the money to feed it. Case closed.

And of course if they don't bother to feed them they usually don't bother to give them any water either. Which means zero attention.

7. It astounds me how cruel some people can be.
I think I give people a little too much credit sometimes when it comes to empathy, especially when I see dogs looking like that.

That's awesome what you did for them.

9. You are wonderful!
The world needs more people like you. Thanks for your compassison to these beautiful animals!

I have very un-vegan thoughts about humans who treat animals badly. I could easily perpetrate the same behavior on them - put them on a leash & stop feeding them.

It's clearly abuse, will charges be brought against the "owners" ?

Stupid humans....grrrrrr.

12. Animal Services
Is anything being done about the "Animal Services" you mentioned that wouldn't do anything? Often laws governing animal care are minimal, but at least food, water, and shelter should be covered.

17. Amazing, amzing, amazing!
You know, I promised myself that I wouldn't adorn animal lovers with higher respect just because they love animals, but when you read stories like this one, it is all but impossible to not revere my fellow animal lovers all the more. :)

Wonderful work!
