KITTEN'S LUCKY DAY
Verizon lineman Chad Powell comforts a kitten he helped dig out of an eroding hillside along Howe's Run Road in Fawn yesterday. Jim Torcasso, rear, was directing traffic when he heard crying and directed the linemen to animal. Powell had been considering getting a kitten, and plans to keep this one.

My co-worker went to extraordinary lengths to rescue a tiny kitten that he spotted on his way to work, out in the boonies during a rainstorm. 14 years later, that 1 1/2 lb. bedraggled kitten is a very pretty, but spoiled, cat who has just risen from his window bed to have a snack and drink from his own water fountain. But I have often wondered how he manged to get there and if he was a lone drop-off, if he just got lost, or if there were anymore. *sigh*:shrug:

My little dog, who shares my chair as I write this, became homeless after his owner died when he was nine-years-old. Despite the fact that he is tiny and a very rare breed, my poor little guy was threatened with euthanasia twice. He would have been so easy to place, but no one wanted him nor would make the effort. It was just kismet that he found me.

But he also had a biological sister who was placed separately. She was his leader and they had been together all of their lives. He is doing okay now, but, initially, he was absolutely lost without her. I did not hear great things about her adoptive home, but I don't know much about it. I am still in touch with my friend in rescue who brought us together and I still ask her if she's heard anything about his sister. I'd take her, as well, in a heartbeat. It's kind of a dream of mine to reunite them.

Don't even ask me about my cats...:shrug:

Both of my dogs were adopted from local shelters. Each was eight weeks old when we adopted them (a month apart). I often wonder how they ended up in the shelter and where the rest of their litter is now. All we know is that each dog was "picked up on the street" :shrug:.

I can't imagine losing an eight week old puppy and not going to look for it. We had to wait five days in each case, to see if the original owners came by to claim them. A good policy, but I was nervous that someone would come by and I would lose out on adopting them.

Offered for adoption together, but I do know that this decreases their chances. Kudos to you for reuniting them!:toast:

As for my little dog, I can't imagine anyone with any conscience at all separating him and his sister. My friend in rescue, who told me all about my little guy before I even met him, said that his vet's office was extremely upset that they were allowed to be split up. And this doesn't even begin to describe what the poor dog felt like.;(

All I know is that the guy who ended up with my little dog, and subsequently passed him on to me, tried to adopt the sister, as well, because my guy was so miserable alone. But all he was told by the man who had her was "my wife likes the dog." *sigh* And he told me that the man has other dogs, labs, and called him "a flake." And this is coming from a guy who was prepared to have the dog euthanized rather than make the effort to find him another home. I called just at the right moment, it seems.;(

But I'll ask my friend in rescue, yet again. She loves to think about my little guy's happy ending. She says that it gives her hope when she gets discouraged.:-)

And I know what you mean about the five days. This must be standard policy, since I'm in NY. This is what happened with my cat, who I rescued myself. I brought her, and the have-a-heart trap that I had borrowed, straight to the animal hospital when I finally managed to catch her (after feeding her outside for almost four months!). Even though I had found her in my yard, I still had to wait the five days. And I knew that no one was going to claim her. So I made a point of calling and visiting regularly, not to mention paying for her inoculations up front, just to make sure that they knew that this was my cat. I have subsequently learned that this is the only animal hospital in the area that will still euthanize a healthy animal. She never went back there!:grr:

a few days after the northridge earthquake in 1994 a kitten started hanging out around my apartment complex. I guess she had run off from her home during the quake.

Since I was alone when the quake happened and had been thinking of getting a pet well, how could I NOT let this loud and cute bundle of fur into my life. The universe came through for both of us.

My husband graduated from Cal State - Northridge :-). We were living back East in 1994. My sister was living in Pasadena.

Do you still have that kitty? What did you name her?

Yes, I still have Geneva. She is the smartest cat I have ever known. She really knows how to communicate with me.

I think she is the reincarnation of a cat my family had when I was young. She has the same personality - smart, loyal, talkative, a little cranky at times but sweet and loving when she wants to be.

Hoping to post pics of her soon...gotta get that roll of film developed!

Big, burly man in overalls hears a kitten...runs to get help. Another manly man, hard hat and all, starts digging where the source is...
Hairy-chested, calloused handed linesman assures tender kitten that he/she is now safe. Seriously...even I wouldn't try to take that kitten from him.

at my parents' house. They couldn't tame the mother cat, but could save two of the kittens (this was some years ago). The cat found and brought a stray Himalayan home. He's still there and likes my father, which is funny 'cause dad doesn't like anyone else.

Seems like that's been the case with all the pets I have ever had.

I wonder if it would fit in my sig. :D
