The cable guy should have paid ME last night
My broadband modem died, and the cable company brought me a replacement. I joked that it looked like a gray MacMini, and the installer stared at me blankly. Since I always tell the cable company I have a Mac in hopes that they'd send someone who knew about them, I knew it was not a good sign.

Sure enough, he hooked up the cable and Ethernet properly, but didn't have a clue as to how to get the Mac activated--"Can you show me where your TCP/IP is? I need those numbers." I ran my Internet setup assistant, in which you all you have to do type in the domain name and your ID, and it worked. A fine way to spend my last night on OS9 (I'm installing Panther tonight). At least I'm getting a credit for the three DU-less evenings I spent offline.

1. How was the OSX installation.
I'm still on Jaguar with my G4 400, but the internet setup was--well, I don't remember how it was.

TOO EASY!

2. Change in plans--installing Panther Monday night

And I'll be using a program called XPostFacto for booting. It helped me install Jaguar on my 233Hz G3, but it crashed two days later because the processor was just too slow. I have a 1Ghz G4 processor now, and XPostFacto installed my Jaguar perfectly--apparently it can install OSX even on pre-PPC Macs!

3. Update
With the help of X Post Facto, I installed Panther successfully once I got the settings right. There's a little checkbox at the bottom of the XPF screen which launches a balloon help and tells you which settings to try first. And I was automatically updated to version 1.3.8. Now I'm running with the pack, and I'm never looking back!

4. Comcast would not even deal with our machines.
We do NOT have internet explorer on any machine in the house. Period, end of story, end of discussion, no this cannot be changed. Their idiot staff is trained to only be able to set up using Internet explorer.

He could not handle Safari, Mozilla, Firefox or Netscape (which we do have). Idiot.

Comcast got a nasty call from me after Mr. Pcat and I had to set up the system ourselves.

6. Go apply at Comcast (or your local cable shop.)
Most of them are always looking for people willing and able to drive trucks, dig trenches for new lines, run cable in houses, etc. However, they rarely advertise.

Believe me, I'd be very happy to see more competent people in such jobs.
