This is my first Mac, bought in Feb, 2000. Still runs flawlessly.
I mostly use the following programs: Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, InDesign 2 and Dreamweaver MX.
I do all my own maintenance and want to learn more.

I am writing this post on my second Mac, a Dual Proc G4 1.25 Gig tower with a Gig of RAM, 4x Superdrive, and 54X CDRW. It also has aftermarket cooling fans so it only sounds like a B17 on the runway and not an SR71 Blackbird on the runway.

Mrs. McLargehuge uses a 400 MHz G3 B/W Tower with 512 meg of RAM and an updated PCI Video card (Radeon 7000). She has a Zip drive and a DVD ROM drive.

Right down to the PS2 games and Brak toy, LOL.

I have owned Macs since back in '85 when my parents bought a Mac Plus and I took it to college 6 years later.

I started with an original Macintosh in 84 and never looked back.

I edit video and do website work on mine.

I need to upgrade to a 17" laptop with a superdrive. My company is going to get a full blown DualProc FCP HD production station in the first Q of 05. We will also install Avid Express Pro on it to be able to collaberate with a client who Avids.

My main computer is a TiBook 550.

Been using Macs my whole life. My current Mac is a geriatric 333Mhz iMac (strawberry...yeah, girliest computer EVER :P). When I find some gainful employment I'm definitely getting a Powerbook. I'm in some serious lust with those TiBooks.

My very first Mac was a Mac SE with a HUGE 8 MB harddrive. Man I thought I was hot shit. :) Then I got one of the original Power Macs, the 6100/66, except it finally died on me recently and I had to put it out to pasture. :(

I still have the NYT article about the introduction of the PowerPC chip clipped and hanging on my bulletin board. I'm such a dork! :silly:

tower with no problems. I'm keeping it for a while because I have a SCSI Epson printer that prints out huge pictures. For example some of my photos are 15" by 30".

Just ordered the software! There's a webcast I really want to see, but it's only compatible with windows media player 10!!!

I go back and forth between home and work with a 20 GB smartdrive.

my emac is a 700 mhz with combo drive and 40 g hd, with 1 gb memory

through firewire. An external is a must to back-up your stuff for when trouble happens. ;)
(And 40 gigs of hd is not enough for me).

My G5 has the dual processor, cd & dvd burner and.. probably a lot of stuff I don't even know how to use. Wish I did.

I'm really not too 'puter literate, but I scolded, begged, and finally convinced Mr. juslikagrzly to get the first iMac. He's solidly converted.

I have a G4 tower and just bought a G4 iBook in June. I'm still struggling with Airport trying to network them. Finally got the iBook to recognize Airport... something wrong with the antennae I guess, had to send it back to Apple.


My first Mac was a 512KE. Then worked my way up with Quadra, a 5300 Powerbook (still have it, actually) and now into the G4s. Might have been another one in there somewhere, but I can't remember.

The first revision . . . so while I'm packin' a mean 512 MB of RAM, I've only got a 500MHz G4 and a piddly 8MB of video memory. I've also got one of those cranky old slot-loading DVD-ROM drives. Makes a lot of funny sounds but it still works. Even so, I love my mac! :loveya:

This is my first Mac, i'm a recent convert since I got a job doing some graphic design. I'm very glad I switched, and i'm never going back.

MacOS 8.6 was my first one - still working.
I once tried touching a PC mouse in a library - got stumped right there. Yuk!

Someplace, I still have an AppleE hidden away.

As for printers, I have Brother fax/printer dedicated to the McMini, (and fax) and a fine Xerox Phaser 6200 that has been a work horse for years. Only one major repair when the toner hose let loose, and sprayed toner all over. But, after 70,000 pages, for a solo law practice, it has been great.

I have been using TimeSlice for Time and Billing, but recently migrated to Legal Suite as a legal database, office management and Time and Billing tool. I am quite content, and still am learning its Document forms support.
I gave up on microsphtphtphtpht and only use NeoOffice for spreadsheets, Wordprocessing, etc. Frankly, it is better than what MS provides us McUsers. Legal suite combines with my iCal and Addressbook, AND combines data with my iPhone.

The idea of going back to dictating a document, waiting for a printout, revising it, and redoing it again gives me the shakes. I'm more productive (and more in control) running the office solo.

Since I'm a Unix person, I did not seriously get into Macs until OS X came out. I am the proud owner of a G3 iBook. We also have around the house a bondi blue iMac, a G3 tower, a PowerBook and an old NuBus Power Mac (dual boots into Mac OS 9 and MkLinux.) Oh yeah, and one Windoze box.

I have a G3 iBook but I'm planning to upgrade when the Sims 2 comes out. Already saving. :-)

in the past ive owned a classic, powermac 9600 dual 330, g3 b & w, and a g4 400 mhz. so this emac is a nice step up but only cost me around $500 and it has everything i need - and more

of Apple developers on the inside. I worked for a magazine in 1986 that featured Mac software and was published in conjunction with Steve Jobs and I got my Classic as a bonus for figuring out how to interface the Mac with a Wang.

I've had or used about every model since then. I'm in the advertising/publishing biz, so luckily I also get to use them at work as well.

Right now, I'm using my new G4 iBook that my husband bought me for my birthday/anniversary and he has TiBook (Powerbook). We have an airport wireless network in our condo and lots of related gadgets (iPods, etc.) and software - we're both serious MacAddicts! We love to go to the Apple store and check out the new stuff.

What a good idea -

Started with Apple II*, then first Classic, then Quadra, then Wallstreet laptop, now Powerbook G4.

I love Appke and am thrilled beyond belief that I have an Apple Store less than 20 minutes away.

with 1 gig of RAM. It's the last of the titanium models before they switched to aluminum. Prior to this I had a 400 mhz Powerbook G3. Planning on getting either a G5 Powerbook when they're released or a G5 imac when they are upgraded. Oh, decisions, decisions.

I got one just like yours on eBay just to have the most powerful version, 1gig + 1gig, in that case design.

An apple guy told me, I'm not sure this is true, that Steve Jobs had joked with designers about making a super thin ultimate notebook.
They went ahead and started, and when he found out he told them to keep going.
Many patents on forming titanium resulted.
Aluminum turned out to be a far more easy material to work with and had less signal resistance for the airport card.
The thin bezel around the screen has never been bested.

A beautiful machine. I've got an Air now, it's hard not to love how light and thin it is.

Have a G4, my monitor is sitting on a 7500 (don't use), had an old IISI (long gone) and would give my eye teeth for one of those 24" flat screen Apple displays.

Have I had problems? Yes. In 15 years, I've had 2 drive crashes Ñ one semi-fatal and on the other, was able to save the info.

My daughter has a PC laptop that was give to her. She prefers the Mac in my office.

I taught in a school district that was mac all the way, so I went mac and haven't looked back. Never did get into PCs.

First mac was a grape 5 flavor. It worked from 98 til spring of this year without one single problem.

Our current computer is an eMac. Wanted the new iMac, but the old iMac crashed on the day we closed on our house, we had to take what we could get with what $ we had. We don't do anything much but surf the net and burn CDs, so it's been more than fine for us.

This is my third mac. My first one was an LCII. Never have had a problem and I'll never purchase any other brand.

I bought my first computer as an impoverished graduate student in 1984. I was really intrigued by the Macintosh and learned that the university that I would be teaching at in the fall had joined the Apple Consortium that meant faculty and students could by a Mac for something like half price. But they said I couldn't participate until I was actually on campus, and I needed a computer to write my disseration, so I wound up buying a Sanyo PC clone (the first real clone, I believe) instead.

I did use Macs off and on in teaching, particularly once Hypercard and hypertext programs like StorySpace came along. I even bought a Mac-on-an-expansion-card to put in my home PC, which basically turned a PC into a dual machine that could run as a Mac Classic as well.

With the introduction of OS X, though, it was only a question of time before I became a Switcher. I've used Unix and Linux since grad school days, and once I realized I could have both Unix and a beautiful Mac OS on one machine I joyously said goodbye to Bill Gates. A new job with a hardware budget let me choose a dual G5 Power Mac in 2002, and not long after I bought an iBook for personal use. (Still have a PC clone as the home desktop machine, for reasons of finances and spousal harmony.)

My first Mac was a IIsi which I spent a whopping $8K back in the 90s. (Still trying to recover from that ass-beating) I have worked on a IIci, IIfx, quadra, iMac, Blue & White, Sawtooth and coming this January, I will have an awesome, supercharged G5 at work! (Art guy, you know ;) )

I couldn't live without 'em!

I got limited space (Kitchen table), so I choose notebooks, but that new IMac G5 looks very snazzy!

Pcat writes and works exclusively on a 15 in Powerbook g4 1Ghz (the same one John Kerry uses, as it happens.) with a superdrive and a gig of RAM. I've got an external 80 gb hard drive, and external 60 gb HD and a portable 120 gb lacie hard drive. OS X.

Mr. Pcat writes and works exclusively on the same type of machine, but he has a macintouch keyboard instead of the standard QWERTY keyboard. OS X

The current gateway is a 12 inch 500 mHz iBook with a 10 GB HD and a CD-DVD reader. OS X.

The current test environment is a 12 inch 500 mHz iBook with a 20 GB HD and a Combo drive (read write CD, Read DVD) that's dual booting both Yellowdog and OS X.

My current machine of choice is a 12" G4 iBook, 1.07GHz, 512 MB RAM, which I bought to take to Japan this fall. It replaced a clamshell iBook, which worked fine, and even had OS 10.2 on it, but weighed far too much. However, I like the new iBook so much that I hardly ever use my desktop computer, which is...

an iMac SE-DVD, vintage 2000, 400 MHz. I like portability, especially since I have an Airport network in my apartment and a nearby coffee shop with wireless Internet, so I'm planning to replace the desktop model with a 15" (or better yet, drool, a 17") Powerbook.

Then I would use the Powerbook as my main machine and really keep the iBook only for travel. I like the security of having two computers. It was a lifesaver when the hard disk on the iMac started acting weird and then completely crashed after its move across the country. Fortunately, I had already backed up the iMac to my old iBook, so I didn't lose anything.

My daughter has a Mac, but I don't know what model. It has a flat screen with a long "neck", and a round base.

We are Mac people!

First was an Apple IIe whose printer finally died this year....computer from the 1980's still works. Second was one of the first iBooks, a blue clamshell. One of the dogs knocked it off the bookshelf and broke the part on the bottom which recharges the battery. AppleStore estimate to fix it was $650. So on to my third, a 17" PowerBook G4 which I love.

At home we have 3 emacs networked together ( one printer, one internet connection with router). Works great. These things never freeze up. The newest is a 1 gHZ G4 with superdrive, our 8th mac going back to 1996.

At work, I'm hanging on to a G4 that still runs OS 9.2. I don't think it has many more miles left on it so, soon, I'll be taking that long walk of saying goodbye and then upgrading much software and peripherals to a new G5 and OS X.

You might ask, why am I still running OS9??

The answer: I am a professional composer & sound designer, so I use my computers for specific audio/music purposes. It took me a long time to configure them to run the appropriate software effectively, and now that they do exactly what I want, I am loathe to make major changes to the system. Some of the software I use professionally might not be properly functional under OSX. For now, it still does the job.

However, once Apple releases G5 Powerbooks, I am going to buy one and make the big change. My primary application (Logic Audio) is OSX-friendly, and some of the smaller apps will at least work in the Classic shell (I hope). Since new macs come with the latest OS pre-installed, that will save me the headache of upgrading on my old machines. Once I get the new powerbook, that will become my primary audio/music computer. I will keep the old desktop just for internet & office use.

. . . and still running OS 9.2. I'd love to upgrade to OS X, but I don't have enough memory. I bought a 128 MB chip a few months back to add to my 64, but it doesn't seem to fit quite right and my computer won't recognize it.

The website I bought it from specifically stated that the memory was for a 300MHz iBook G3, which mine is, so I don't know why it won't work.

Anyway, as slow as it is, I still love my mac and I'd never switch to another operating system. :-)

I work on a w98 machine at work and I hate it. Constantly try and talk the owner into somehwo switching to Macs... alas our DB software is not cross platformed and migrating would just cost too much right now... Oh well I can always hope.

Currently in our household is an iMac 400 DVSE, a blueberry iBook 300, PowerBook 12 inch 867, and an iPod - a 1st generation 5 gig that still holds a 4 hour charge in the battery. In the past, I had a Mac IIci and even further back, an Apple IIe that my dad had bought, I taught myself DOS and QuikBasic on it. I'm eyeing the iMac G5 but I'll wait until the 2nd generation...maybe. Oh yeah, the home network is Airport wireless.

The company I worked for actually sprung for a couple of Lisas at $10k a pop. I got a fat Mac in '84 or '85, and never looked back. Although my office is still trapped in Windows hell, I traded my trusty rusty PowerMac clone for an e-Mac about a year ago, got cable access, and am a happy camper. It's the 3.3 version, 384 MBytes of RAM with room for more, and an 800 MHz processor. It meets my needs, and should for a while.

As a teacher, I was trained on Macs. So I am partial. I have an old LCIII I bought in 93 that still works. Never had one problem with it. And I have an older Powermac in my classroom that I do most of my word processing on. Both have Stylewriter printers that have never given me one bit of trouble.

When people ask me why I have a Mac, I tell them that in the 11 years since I bought my first MAC for home, hubby has gone through 6 or 7 different PC setups. But that ole LCIII still works just fine. :)

I'm still stuck using the ole' iMac 333 I've been using for almost 6 years. Also, have a 350 slot loader I picked up cheap a couple of years ago.

Reading these posts makes me lust for a new one or maybe OS 10, but I'm broke thanks to the wonderful Bushit economy. I've kicked the RAM up on both iMacs (the 333 is one of those that won't go past 256 regardless of what you put in it) and keep them running smooth with DiskWarrior and TechTool. Great computers for my little brain, but every time I see one of the new ones, I pull out my credit card statements and see if there is any room left. Nyet! :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :-(

I LOVE the 12.1" screen dont want anything bigger. I just need a mobile office.

The iBook is a supplement to our Windows desktop.

But I'm thinking about replacing THAT with a Powerbook.

My first exposure to computers (well almost 1st exposure)was after I retired and I bought a used MacPlus with a small external hard drive. I added an HP printer. I thought it was wonderful to be able to correct all kinds of mistakes without using white-out or starting over. One of the first things I did was start publishing a little political newsletter. I loved that little machine! Gave my typewriter away within a few days. I liked the MacPlus because it was so easy to understand how it was organized from a user's point of view. The System Folder was an open book.

After that, a 6200 Performa where I graduated to pretty heavy database work on voter files using FileMakerPro. Eventually I got a G3 b/w refurb (which I still have and use in OS9). Last year I got a new G4 PowerBook and am finally learning OSX.(which I am not entirely comfortable with).

I will never use anything but a Mac.

I am the ad hoc administrator for all three which is kinda sad since my knowledge is somewhat limited.

I run OS 9.2.2 on all three and have Netscape installed as our browser.

I have a problem that maybe some could help me with. Everytime I have tried to download, install and run either Real Player or Windows media player for Mac, they don't work correctly.

The one by microsoft doesn't load correctly and the Real Player loads but it does something to the internet connection and I can't get online.

It is very frustrating as we are not able to listen to anything unless it is in the Quicktime format, which is not often.

We want to listen to AirAmerica among other things.

I saw the posting for doing an Applescript but I get the dialog boxes as they were listed. Right now I don't have Real Player loaded but I have the CD for Netscape and could reload it if I needed to. Thanks in advance if anyone can help me. We don't get AirAmerica on the radio here all we get is right wing garbage and that is no fun :(

This iMac is definately the best computer I've owned so far, and I've been building and modding 'puters since the first TRS-80 back in the brown shoe corp days.

However, I gave up the clamshell iBook when I needed something lightweight for travel, so I got an iBook G4 in 2004
That was fine until a client demanded that I use their proprietary software, which ran only on Windows
I then shelled out for an Intel duo iBook in the summer of 2007, which is where I am today.

The only thing I like about Windows is the Free Cell game included. :-)

Made in the spring, but I guess that's old now and pushed out on sale because of the new MBPs.

2 GHz, 2Gb, 15" laptop. i like it fine, but don't find it to stack up all that well to sliced bread. it's been pretty reliable, but it also has it's moments. not that i take very good care of it, but still.
hate the phone. hate the network. hate the louse f'ing battery. hate the interface, because my skin is dry. i am old, and also work in clay, so i am forever licking my fingers to use my phone. it's a great concept. when they get the bugs out of it, i will probably like it.

actually I start with paper, make origami shapes, then make them 6 ft tall in steel. But I also LOVE my iPhone and the McPro.

In two weeks? cool. That's just 45 minutes north of mois.

Unfortunately, I was hit by a drunk driver a few months ago, and my steel sculpture has taken a summer vacation. You really can't lift 100 lbs of steel and weld it with a cast or herniated discs.

Not bad, considering I bought the G3 in 1998. But I know I've pushed it as far as it can go and the next stop is Intel.

I have a MacBook 2.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, 250GB hard drive. I have a partition set up with Boot Camp in which I run Windows XP, due to a job-related bit of software that only runs under Windows.

This is my first Mac, after nearly two decades of putting up with Windows machines. My daughter has had a MacBook for 2 years, and my son got a MB pro late last year so I've had a brief, informal introduction to Macs before buying one.

I'm replacing the bundled mouse (2 button) with a Logitech G9 (3 button, but mostly for the ergonomics of it).

It's my first Mac. I used to be an Amiga fanboy, then turned to PC hardware running OS/2, BeOS, Linux, and Windows -- but Vista put me over the edge. No more Microsoft, and I'm looking at another field to get into anyway so the Mac is ideal.

As for 'cost' issues, this Mac is worth it. Most 24" screens by themselves are $500. These $500 monitors are 'cheap' 6-bit TN panels that feature color shifting (an obvious no-no for anything to do with graphic or web design). A good monitor alone is going to be $1000. Minimum. The iMac display was consistent throughout and did not appear to distort color or brightness at angles. A website I surfed, discussing H-IPS, proved the 24" iMac.

Also knowing Adobe supports the Mac (long may they do so!!!) sealed the deal.

They are energy efficient too - or certainly use less.

I'll be using my 24" Soyo Topaz S monitor as a secondary display, though I know it won't look as good, it still has a use.

You bet I'm happy.

If I had the money, I'd have gone with a Mac Pro. But the speed is overkill; I don't need 8 cores and I don't do 3D rendering.

I retired the G4 and it's just sitting in my living room until I think of something cool to do with it.

Now have a G5 dual 2.5GHz running Leopard. This was one of the last PowerPC models made.

I still have room to add 6 gigs of RAM to it. So far it's running like a dream.

This was the first time I used Migration Assistant to get my stuff onto the new computer, and it worked great.

The Mac Mini arrived yesterday--a month premature.

My "Mac-enstein's" performance has slowed down before, but the answer was always an upgrade of either RAM or the OS. Now I can't upgrade it any further, which is NOT a complaint because it took six years to get to this point. I gave it a dignified sendoff, of course.

So now I'm using the current Mac OS for once in my life, at nearly twice the processing speed plus three times more RAM than I'm used to. I decided on a refurbished model because I keep my files on an external drive and don't need the 160GB of hard drive space the newest Mac Minis offer. And thank goodness for Rosetta--I don't have to upgrade the apps I was running on the Mac-enstein to make them Intel-friendly.

Given to me by friends who were upgrading.

The "Big Dog" is a 2003 Powermac G4 FW800 with dual 1.42 processors and 2gb RAM. I've got it in my recording studio running Logic 7.2 on OSX Leopard 10.5.8. What can I say, it is still a beast for the task at hand. I got it last year and after using it for a week, I sent the 3 year old Windows box I was using in the studio to the recyclers.

I'm posting this from the "Bubble Butt", a 2001 600mhz iMac G3. It has its limitations of course, but, it still soldiers on :patriot:
