Inkscape, open source SVG graphics program. Very good. Needs Apple's X11. Should be in your Utilities folder, if not it will be on your install disc.

You can do a lot in the terminal. Much of what those apps do are just unix commands.

OSX runs them at night automatically. You only really need them if you turn your computer off at night. These utilities are essential for laptop users.

It does many things, but what I like most about it is that it adds an applications menu to the apple menu just like windows start menu had.

You can access any app in one click by moving through the appls folder in your dock just like that bar on the bottom of windoze.

I know some people hate the dock but I keep mine pretty small, with mag mostly off, and I keep the dozen apps there that I use the most so they are easily accessible with one-click.

Genie and mag off. I put folders below the divider line next to the trash can.

If you haven't tried Desktop Manager, you should. I first learned about pagers when I used Linux. It's like having multiple monitors. http://desktopmanager.berlios.de/

On a personal level, can you point me to any web sites that will give the average climate and culture stuff (culture? Me?) for Tennessee? We are looking for a home that's not quite as warm as Florida, and the tourists and relocators are ruining everything here. Soon there won't even be enough water to drink.

It is like having tabbed browsing for the desktop.

What part of Tennessee are you thinking about moving to?

It is hot there, but not tropical. there might be a day or two of ice and snow depending on your elevation.


My wife knows Tennessee much better than I.

One thing I like about it is that, in addition to everything else it does, it allows you to disable the "menu fadeout" effect and have it just disappear like it did pre-OS X. It seems like such a minor thing, but it's really helpful if you're running an older, slower Mac.
