for free as long as I have internet access. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7swGVwNV84&feature=related

It took three days to get the phone number for free but could call out before I got them.

The $29 headphones w/mic from apple work great

The iTouch can also control my screen, browse my files on my iMac using the program telekinesis. http://code.google.com/p/telekinesis/

Amazing device that allows me to surf the web, write e-mail
play movies, youtube, music, and a phone plus access my computer.

1. Have you tried Textfree Lite?
It lets you send free text messages to any cell phone (from a wifi). I don't text a lot but I tested it and it does work. The free version has a limit on how much texting u do in a day but if you pay for the full application it is add free and you can send unlimited amount of texts.

2. It's all your fault!
I don't normally buy stuff, but decided I needed to upgrade from my 1G ipod shuffle (a gift) after 2 years. I ended up buying the ipod touch and turning it into a phone, thanks to your post. I'm waiting on my phone number right now. I found some good headphones for $22 online that work great (did a test call tonight). I've been wanting to get rid of my LAN line (comcast-and got rid of most of my cable as well) for some time now and finally found an excuse to do it, though I still have a pre-paid cell for those times I don't have access to a wireless connection. The iTouch is a really cool toy. Thanks!

4. Okay .... I have no idea what I'm doing ......
I downloaded FRING but cannot find it anywhere. I tried to download it again at iTunes reported I had already downloaded it.

I can't see it on my computer or on my iPod Touch.

I downloaded VoipStunt. It is asking for a credit card. I thought it was free?

Maybe I'm just too old and stupid to understand this stuff.

5. No you're not...

I think kids these days are born with this knowledge, LOL. We have to struggle. You should be able to see FRING on your iPod touch once you've installed it (perhaps on the next screen over?). I couldn't download VoipStunt since I have a Mac, but I did sign up for it. I was asked for a credit card as well to buy minutes, but I disregarded it and haven't had to provide my credit card info at all in order to use it. All I did was go to FRING and select 'SIP' and then 'VoipStunt' as the program. Then I entered in the username and password I created for Voipstunt and I've been able to make calls. I have read places where VoipStunt might cut you off after 60 minutes after which you'll have to start paying, but supposedly it's cheap. I haven't had that happen so far. I did have a call disconnect after 20 minutes today, but was able to call back, no problem. The lag time is not bad at all--probably less than 4 seconds, and the other party heard me clearly. YouTube has a lot of instructional videos on this process.

I ordered headphones with the buit-in microphone at McAlly for $19 and they came within 3 buisiness days. They work great and come with a few extras. Here:

I also got a phone number by signing up at IPKall. It took 2 business days. You just enter in your VoipStunt username and password as well as the proxy server, which is sip.voipstunt.com, or something like that.
