I hope what Warner Bros. did isn't going to be the norm.

I just Bought Harry Potter 6 on Blu-Ray. The digital copy is on the internet, not on a disc you just load into the Mac.

It took 5 minutes to download Star Trek from it's disc. It's taking 4 HOURS!!!! to get HP into iTunes.:grr:

I only have 3.5 mbs on my internets. WB couldn't afford a 55� disc in their $22 Blu-Ray? :eyes:

1. Yeah, I hate that. I wish that Blu-Rays all came in 'flipper' form.

Universal next month is going to start releasing some Blu-Ray discs with Blu-Ray on one side and DVD on the other.

With flipper discs we can simply rip copies from the DVD side for digital usage using Handbrake.

If they would have started like this, Blu-Ray would have a Lot more of the market.

They wanted at least 30% of the market by now or Blu-Ray would be considered a failure.

It's at 13%.

2. The reason for 13% can be summed up in 1 word. Upconverting.

DVD/Blu Ray players these days are bragging about upconverting DVD signals to an HD picture. It's a paltry substitute for actual 1080p or even i, but it's convincing a lot of rubes out there that DVDs are HD, so no use for Blu Ray.

Then there's the downloaders, whose never actually seen a blu ray in action.... They think a 1080 download of a 2 hour film at 2-4 gigs is actually hi def... so no need for blu ray. They're wrong too. Sad to get used to digital artifacting, washed out fleshtones and sound drop offs and be impressed.

5. 1920x1080p compressed for a 4GB download is going to look

far, far, far, far, far, far, far, far worse than what's on a 25 or 50GB Blu-Ray disc... :)

After all, 720x480i is compressed into a 7GB disc via MPEG2 encoding...

Makes moving it onto another format a hell of a lot easier.
but yeah, im afraid that these companies just don't get it.
The RIAA can't protect them
By making it even harder to put content THAT YOU BOUGHT on your mobile device for later viewing, they are only encouraging piracy.

oh well.

So why people who bought VHS and laserdisc and DVD and now Blu-Ray get quadruple-dipped, never mind extended-, director's cut-, and other special-releases...

I had 5, all X-Mas gifts.

Never could afford LD, but bought into DVD right away.... got suckered into the "special edition" come ons for awhile, but picture quality became the only reason why I bought the SEs. Extra content I would watch once if at all.

EDIT: might as well list them... Young Frankenstein, Die Hard, Star Wars Trilogy.

7. I only buy one copy of a film

if the special edition is out when I want to buy it, great. If not, who cares. As long as I get my film in widescreen, and at least only as cut as the theatrical version, I'm happy
