Poll question: Are you a cook, or a baker?
...Or both?

I can cook like no tomorrow, but can't bake my way out of a paper bag. :D

You?

"Remember... pastry senses fear"

5. You put that so well!
And boy, can I relate. Fortunately, my successes come often enough to make my pedestrian days worth every compensatory pizza I've ever ordered.

3. I'm a cook
I bake only when I hafta .... or when I feel adventurous. Even then, my baking is limited to some bread or rolls, foccacia .... and of course, pizza.

4. I can cook just about anything. I can bake the following well:
Pies (including crust)
Cookies
Brownies/bars
Bread (most ambitious: bagels)
Muffins/quick breads
Custards
Empanandas

I cannot bake, to save my life:
Biscuits (15 difference recipes, three different ovens, yes I replaced the baking powder, none have EVER worked)
Basic chocolate cake (still trying -- never tried a white/yellow/etc. cake)

Oddly enough, I considered myself a better baker than cook a year ago, but it's reversed now.

6. Not to be immodest, but I do both, and make candy occasionally
My french bread is pretty darned good, and we like MY cinnamon rolls better than Cinnabon.

I love to cook and am good at it, but rarely do much these days. My "dinner crowd" grew up and moved on, and it's just me & my husband, so cooking's not that big a deal. He's diabetic and desserts never were much of a thing for him, so I don;t bake much now.

9. I prefer cooking to baking
mostly because I can never stifle the urge to add just a little more of this or a little more of that. I am constantly changing recipes on the fly. That doesn't work so well with baking. Baking is much more precise than I care to be.

10. I love to cook. Baking scares me to death...
We never had desserts in my family, except on the occasional holiday...

11. Both!
I don't measure things, so that sometimes causes massive screwups, but I'm creative and flexible enough that I can usually work my way through whatever mess I make.

I've been known to change cake batter into a tasty chicken marinade on the fly when things didn't seem to be working so well.

12. Good cook, iffy baker.
I think I just don't bake enough, and that's my problem. I make one cake per year, on average.
