People go nuts for my Chex mix: here's the recipe
Edited on Tue Nov-22-05 09:42 PM by fishnfla
I vary from the ingredients and the procedure of the recipe you find on the side of the box. Everyone loves this one!

12 tablespoons butter or margarine
4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
3 teaspoons seasoned salt(Lowreys)
1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
3 cups Corn Chex cereal
3 cups Rice Chex cereal
3 cups Wheat Chex cereal
1 1/2 cups pretzel sticks
2 cups garlic flavor bite sized bagal chips*
1 cup nuts**
2 cups Durkee french fried onion pieces ***
1-2 teaspoons Accent (msg) to taste****

* may substitute melba toast rounds
** optional: I do not use nuts in my version
*** optional: I like 'em in there sometimes
**** optional again, the dreaded msg!

Astute readers will note that I have kept the amount of cereals about the same and just doubled the seasonings. Hey I said it was good, not good for you...I leave the nuts out, they just settle to the bottom and nobody seems to eat them.
I do vary in the box procedure as below:

1. Heat oven to 250 degrees
2. in a small sauce pan, melt butter. Add W. sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder and garlic powder, mix well and simmer slightly
3. place remaining ingredients that you are using, except Accent, in a roasting pan, mix them together. I use a big foil roasting pan.
4. Using a spoon, drizzle seasonings into cereal mixture, stirring as you go. The idea is to coat all the crunchy stuff as much as possible with the butter/seasoning mixture
5. Bake 1 hour, stirring every 15 mins.
6. Spread on paper towels or newspaper to cool and dry.
7. At this point I will dust the mix with a dose of Accent seasoning.
8. Store in airtight containers

2. Last year I made a huge-ass batch and tried cooking it all at once
What a freakin' mistake that was.

I think it was a quadruple batch, and after a shitload of time, i finally said "screw it", and made it into smaller portions and baked it and THEN it worked proper. Still tasted good, but cooking it all at once was a total failure.

I am trying your receipe this year! The more seasoning the better, in my opinion, and yours sounds wonderful!

4. I tried fixing it once
Never again.

I still don't know what I did wrong, but it took two days to get the smell out of the house, and the stuff wasn't even burned.

Just inedible.

I am so tempted by this recipe, but ...............

<running back to one-gallon Cheeto container>

6. Separated at birth, yep
You got the brain, I got the ability to type.

Personally, I think these people who claim to fix this stuff are all making it up just to make us feel bad. Everyone knows that Chex Mix is ONLY available at Costco.

See? See how they are?
