What's on your kitchen countertop?
What is the one thing - not an appliance - that's always on your kitchen counter?

I realized I always have a big bowl of onions there, no matter what house I'm in. Today, we have two kinds - Maui and yellow.

I'm feeling nosy today.

5. During the season
A basket with tomatoes from my garden. That basket still has a few in it. Early Girls start producing in late June around here and hang in with a few fruits until Christmas. The tomatoes are small and not as good by then, but they're still better than store bought, by gum.

But this is why my very modest two bedroom, one bath in a not-so-hot part of Oaktown cost me $300,000 three years ago. It would cost a lot more now. :)

12. From memory -since the kitchen is not currently very warm and my office is
The Peninsula has the empty bread box and cooling rack, bread knife and french butter dish.

Up by the stove there's a bottle of olive oil with a pour spout, ditto tamari, the salt cellar (Alton Brown's, in fact - that thing is the most useful piece of kitchen hardware I've bought in years), the kitchen scale and a spray bottle of baker's release. There is also a glass vacuum jar with oats in it and a ceramic vacuum jar with bread crumbs.

Between the stove and the sink is a glass jar of utensils, a knife block and glass jar of cream of wheat.

Between the sink and the laundry sink is where the stand mixer, the hot water pot and the rolling pins live.

Across from the peninsula, under the china cabinet is the coffee station, where three french presses (one for tea only), a half dozen cans of tea, a grinder and various other implements of caffeine consumption reside.

Everything is clean, pushed back against the wall and tidy, but many people would consider it cluttered. Oh, well, too bad for them. I'm 5'2" and the lowest surface of my cabinets is at eye level for me; I can't reach the upper shelves without a step-stool, and frankly, my knees don't take well to living on step-stools. Perversely, my knees also don't do well with the under counter storage, either. So, important things live on the counter.

14. At least 3 different kinds of flour...
Let's see, tonight it's Gold Medal unbleached all-purpose, King Arthur bread flour, an empty container for King Arthur all-purpose, and (oops, this makes 4) a bit of Gold Medal bread flour. Also so rice flour. There are more in the pantry...

29. Not really a pig
It's just a little salt gizmo for my kosher salt. I guess it's really called a salt cellar. You can get them in little pig shapes from the King Arthur catalog.

I'll snap a pic tomorrow. :) I'm heading to LaLa Land.

16. Mail, paperwork, junk
dog biscuits, fish bowl, medicine, bag of apples, telephone, cell phone charger, piles of music CDs, roll of tape, dishware we're saving to return to someone.

I have a ton of counterspace, but is it any wonder I never have room to work?

17. No counter space, so no stuff.
I have a dishwasher that has my stand mixer and toaster, and a microwave cart that holds, well, my microwave.

I have a crappy center island that used to have a knife block on it, but as soon as the toddler got tall enough to reach, I put them up high in the pantry.

The top of my fridge ALWAYS has onions, and often has potatoes and bananas.

20. My counters are cluttered
They are covered with two cutting boards that have lips to hold them in place and a "back splash". This workspace is covered with a cookbook holder, two large wire bowls with onions, garlic, 2 butternut squash and 2 sweet taters.

On the side, lives a knife block, a box of Rooibos tea, a bowl with a chicken breasts thawing for dinner, several cannisters with flour, sugar etc and a bag of Masa Harina.

28. I fucking hate clutter, so a small oil thingy, salt and pepper,
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 09:52 PM by Rabrrrrrr
a butter dish (I hate hard butter, too, so it stays on the counter), and a container thingy with spatulas, whisks, chopsticks, and wooden spoons. Oh, and a microwave, but that's tucked up in a corner, so I don't even think of it being there. All this stuff is right next to the stove (I have about 12 inches of counter between the stove and the fridge that holds all the utensils, and about 10 inches between microwave and stove on the other side where I tuck away the salt, pepper, olive oil, and butter.)

Everything else is hidden and out of the way; though way on the opposite side of the sink, I keep the coffee maker and coffee grinder out on the counter as well. It just isn't worth putting them away when I'm done.

And that's over about 15 feet of counter.

Like I said, I hate clutter.
