My Rachael Ray post in the Lounge :(
I had no idea she was so polarizing on DU, and I was simply trying to acknowledge her incredible spirit.

Here's the Lounge link:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x4406741

...and no way am I trying to stir up a posse, just trying to understand if she's the "slut" they say she is

PS: I'll still watch her Food Network shows (fun!)

14. Hey, that's a bit harsh, don't you think?
Although I find it difficult to tolerate her perkiness for a solid half hour, I do recognize that she uses fresh foods, negligible processed foods, and comes up with decent quick dinners.

Besides, I want her kitchen.

3. LOL....I feel for you.
I'm sure I adore some TV "chefs" who rub others the wrong way, too (for example, I actually LIKE Paula Dean...and I know many folks can't stand her).

Whenever Ray is on TV, if my husband's the one with the remote, my response is usually along the lines of "TURN IT TURN IT TURN IT I CAN'T STAND HER!!!"

We still love ya.

;)

13. Rachel is a side talker
she speaks out of one side of her mouth as if she has had a stroke - I get so caught up in watching her mouth that I don't pay attention to what she is cooking. I love Paula Deen, however.

16. What bugs me about her is all her
cutesey words. Like when she says "evoo" and follows it by saying "olive oil." Why not just say olive oil? Also, I make sandwiches, not "sammies" and to me she sounds unprofessional with all her YUM-OH's and all her "insanely" good food. Can't you just say its good? Adults trying to sound all cutesy annoy me. And she is always "popping" things. Pop it in the oven. Pop it in the blender. And so on. Oh, and one thing I find down right ubsurd is her effort to avoid making any uncessary trips from her front counter to her back one. She will go to her back counter and pile stuff up to her chin, because god forbid, she doesn't want to have to make another trip! WTF is up with that? The two counters are what? Four or 5 feet away? You'd think she was driving to Brooklyn and back every time she needed something.

david rosengarten writes like that. Drives me effing nuts. In fact, when this subscription runs out I'll never renew. Christ almighty, we're adults. Could she & rosengarten actually talk like an adult?

okay, rant over.

22. Rosengarten wrote the Dean & De Luca cookbook
which is one of my favorites. I'm really surprised to learn he writes shit like "sammies"...his writing in the book is intelligent (and he has very strong opinions about food that I love to read, even when I disagree with them). I hope he doesn't say things are "yummmm-oh!" though.

26. I don't remember 'sammies'
barf, but he writes 'hammy' for ham, & a bunch of other shit. He drops his g's like dumbya when he writes, he uses italics until I want to scream (he'd also write 'wanna'). And, the worse offense of all, he uses exclamations points!!!!!! Can you imagine?!!!!!! ugh, ugh, ugh. In fact I paid quite a bit for the subscription & basically glance at it & toss it aside because I can't stand reading him.

19. I enjoy her more on the $40 A Day series than I do her 30 minutes meals
OK, my two cents - as for the others:

Paula Dean - real cooking by a real person

Giada - smarmy but her recipes are good

Contessa - luv her best - I think it is way cool she has her hubby so much a part of her show. I want her house too, BTW

Anthony Bourdain - will watch his shows anytime, whatever they are on - just too much fun

Emeril - not too imppessed with his shows, but admire the hell out of what he and all the New Orleans chefs are trying to do for their employees and city. Bless them all for believing in their city.

Bobby Flay - no, you are NOT that good looking

Mario Batali - his presentations and chatter soothe me in a way

Alton Brown - interesting, never boring, sometimes he slips some really adult humor in and you almost miss is...almost

Sandra Lee - no thanks

Sara Moulton - boring as hell

Some of the rest of the, like AL Roker, do not even count.

My opinions only

20. Barefoot Contessa is my favorite as well.
For one thing she can talk like an adult. LOL. I like her recipes because they are fancy without being too complicated.

Giada is okay. I don't think she is stuck up but she comes across that way with her perfect Italian pronunciations. I like some of her recipes, not all of them. I made her recipe for the chocolate chip almond cookies. They were very good.

Paula Deen looks like she'd be a hoot to have as a neighbor. Very down to earth. I don't care for most of what she makes though but sometimes I watch her just cause she is fun to watch.

Sandra Lee is not a cook. She is a can and bag opener. Don't even get the point of the show.

Poor Sara Moulton! I do think she is talented. She studied with Julia Child. Unfortunately she doesn't have the personality og a Julia Child. I think she'd be better off on PBS.

Michael Chiarello. Cute and fun to watch.

Bobby Flay--get over yourself. Grilling is not that difficult.

Alton Brown--quirky but gives a lot of good tips.

23. Also, I do believe Ms. Paula is a democrat.
She devoted an entire hourlong show a year or two ago to Jimmy Carter (he was her guest), and she's obviously TOTALLY smitten by him.

My husband and I, who live over the hills from Chiarello, devoutly hope he'll adopt us one day. We LOVE his show (and want his house).

Alton Brown slays me. Funny and delightfully nerdy (I like learning the science behind brining!).

Tyler Florence--hubba, hubba.

Anthony Bourdain--top of my list of do-able bad boys.

Giada and Rachel--can't stand watching either of them.

24. I saw that show with Jimmy Carter
and I also wondered if she was a Democrat. She really seemed to adore him, didn't she? Also, I think it was last weekend she had a show where she and her new hubby dressed up as Santa and Mrs. Claus and went to either a school or orphanage. I was cleaning with the TV on so I am not sure. But wherever it was there were mostly Black children. I can't imagine a Conservative loving Jimmy Carter and doing kind deeds of any kind, especially involving minorites.

She strikes me as our rarest of political breeds (sadly)--the genteel southern democrat. And not a dixiecrat/democrat--a REAL democrat. Wish we could clone her.

Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 08:21 PM by jaredh
You're talking about Rachel Ray repeating herself but you like the Barefoot Contessa who can't go more than 20 seconds without saying "fabulous" in that annoyingly bourgeois way of hers. I don't know, she just seems like too blue blood, WASP, eastern establishment for me.

and I don't consider myself establishment and I am definitely not a WASP. I can see why she may come across as snobbish to some people. She uses words that are not elementary school sounding. She sounds educated and has good etiquette. Once upon a time that was considered good. :eyes: Yes, she does have some favorite words she repeats, but at least "fabulous" is a word, unlike "sammie" and "yum-oh." I guess that's why it doesn't really annoy me. As for her being a WASP, she is Jewish I believe.

29. I keep all my Paula hate cataloged
on Television WIthout Pity. To me, she is symbolic of everything that's wrong with the network: she can't dice an onion to save her life, she deep fries everything, and then if she really loves it she adds a coat of mayo and cream cheese.

Food Network was once about chefs. Now it's (maybe) about cooking--nothing wrong with that--by people without skills but with "personalities" and gimmicks.
