anyone have a recipe for foolproof toffee that tastes great

I want to make it once where it turns out right the first time. I am an average level baker/cook with no great skills. I was talking with my girlfriend about making this candy this year and she mentioned she tried making it before and it tasted terrible and was a mess even though she used a friend's recipe for whom it turns out great.
