OK, I admit it, I'm getting old and I need a can opener
My arthritis gets worse and worse, I have to call Mr Ketchup to open the cans for me half the time cuz I'm "losing my grip" literally

So I need a freaking electric can opener, but really hate getting one that lives on the counter

Black and Decker and Hamilton Beach both make a "handheld" electric opener that run on rechargeable batteries and there are a couple handhelds that have a cord

so anybody have any experience with any of these? suggestions?

1. Dunno
The few times I have to get anything out if a can these days, either there's a ring pull (which I have to do with padded pliers) or I can still manage my Oxo Good Grips can opener. The knobs on that thing are big enough for me.

I do sympathise, I've had arthritis since I was fourteen.

Let me know which one you end up with and how good it is. I can see a need for one in my future, too.

5. I don't have arthritis,
but I'm lazy. There's a Cusinart can opener sitting in a cupboard somewhere because I hated having to clean the counter every time it skidded to a stop and slopped the can's liquid contents everywhere.

So, I got this OXO - http://www.oxo.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=451 - and I absolutely love it. NO more sharp edges, and that little gripper that lifts off the tops is brilliant.

6. thanks OLL, but I already have one of OXO gripper ones. Which
Cuisinart did you hate? (so I can avoid that one)

7. And it doesn't work for you?
Ouch. I'm sorry. That's no fun at all.

This is the culprit, and now that I see what I paid for it, I might have to get it out, regardless: http://tinyurl.com/9ddxa

8. well sure it works but sometimes it's hard to grip it tight enough to
start the cut

it's just frustrating at this point and certainly not debilitating and that's why I keep Mr Ketchup around... open cans and Gatorade bottles and reach tall stuff on the shelves

gives his life meaning yanno??

but it'd be nice not to have to bug him to open the can of stewed tomatoes on a rainy day

9. So, bite the bullet and buy an electric one. I have the same
problem and gave it up after buying these cab openers that were supposed to be "easy". Very frustrating. But I still keep the old ones in case a miracle happens!

12. We have this one. Very different and very easy on the hands and wrists

http://www.epinions.com/hmgd-Can-Openers-Krups-Krups_Open_Master_Electric_Can_Opener/display_~reviews#

Read the reviews. The first one hated this thing. Ab-so-effing-lutely hated it. So much so, she threw it out.

I am here to tell you her problem was operator error and a clearly worry-wart intractability.

The second and successive reviews are quite different and much more positive.

To be sure, it takes some getting used to as it operates differently from any other can opener. Sparkly's better at it than I am. I tend to reach for the old hand crank jobbie that's been here for years.

Anyway ..... look into this one. I think it would be just what you need for arthritic hands.

That's rule #4, right after never argue with a crazy person, never hardass the heat, and never buy anything from a man who rocks on his heels and plays with the change in his pocket.
