Is this yum, or is this dumb?
Tomorrow it's my turn to bring a snack to the office. I have no time to go to the store, so I'm baking tonight with ingredients I have on hand.

Would white chocolate chip cookie bars w/ orange zest be palatable? If so, how much zest? Should I add it with the dry ingredients, or cream it into the butter and sugar?

Thanks!

1. I think it would be good.
A tip I learned fron Dorie Greenspan is that when you are using zest blend it in with the sugar with your fingers. It really adds a lot. Then cream your butter & sugar/orange zest, then go ahead with the recipe.

4. Yes, but I had doubts about the white chocolate...
It is the not-chocolate chocolate, after all.

I have two unused bags of the chips gathering dust in my cupboard: "They were on sale."

3. I think it sounds fabulous
I'd cream the zest in with the butter and sugar. I think you'll get more flavor out of it that way. I frequently make a couple of batches of spritz cookies with orange or lemon zest every holiday cookie binge time. Think I may even do it today.

8. My Grade: B+
My Senior English teacher in HS always said, "There's no such thing as a perfect paper." With that in mind, I have to say that my cookies were good, but they needed tweaking.

I used the "classic" toll house cookie recipe (which I've never made before). They seemed slightly greasy to me, and the orange flavor was too subtle for my tastes. I made bars, not cookies.

Next time I will: reduce butter to 3/4 C, use all brown sugar, add the zest of two oranges, and bake a little bit longer. I may also use dark chocolate chunks instead of white chocolate.

(White chocolate. Why bother?)

9. After you made the zest
did you use your fingers to rub it into the sugar? Two rinds might be better, but if you rub the zest & the sugar together you'll get a much more orangey flavor.

It sounds like a good experiment.

btw: I never use white chocolate. I'm with you: why bother.

10. I did.
With my trusty micrplane I grated that zest directly into the sugar, rubbed it all together, made sure that there wasn't any clumps of zest, then creamed it easily into the well-softened but not liquid butter.

I guess I should specify that I used a tangerine, not an orange. That may have been my problem, but I've used tangerine zest before with no flavor fallout so I didn't expect such a weak kick.

I love experimenting like this!

11. I was going to ask about a microplane
but you provided the answer.
I recently did something similar with chocolate and orange but used clemintines instead.
Turned out great.
PS
I've never been a fan of white chocolate.

70% bittersweet ROCKS THE HOUSE.
