I *am* the hostess with the mostest.

Don't worry June, I got your back! Behold, Noodle Ring with Creamed Chicken.

From this cookbook, 40 Miracles for Your Table.

I didn't have a proper ring, only a Bundt cake pan which didn't have a large enough hole in the center, so this is what I came up with. The large black pan is just for the water bath, then I put the entire mess into the oven at 350 for about 45 minutes.

And finally, my ungrateful family getting ready to dig in.

Actually, it was pretty good. The original recipe was bland, so I tweaked it by adding fresh ground nutmeg to the chicken and some cayenne to the noodles. :)

So that was my retro food fun for the evening. I am still waiting for someone to make the meatloaf cake H2S posted earlier!

2. That is truly obscene.

The meatloaf cake is brilliant, but no one has actually made it yet. Although someone was threatening to do it, I forget who.

8. The Empress best post if she does make it!
In fact, I challenge her to a retro food show down!

Both kids were quite distressed initially because they saw me making pasta and couldn't figure out where it went since it looked different than they were used to. But they ate plenty once they figured out what was what.

13. Ohhhhh, the latest Modern kitchens, eh?
Might give me some ideas if I ever get around to doing the complete reno on my kitchen. Someone told me they have reissued a bunch of the 50's style laminate counter top in the old colors and patterns. Boomerangs in aqua and pink, that kind of thing.

I need to hit the thrift shops and pick up a couple of molds and ramekins so I can really get into the swing of the Fabulous Food thing. Seems like there would be plenty of used available since this type of cooking really isn't in style anymore.

25. You're on
I'll be damned if you're the only retro goddess here. But by the looks of it I have some stiff competition. You did wonderful!

I'm on the downward slope of a bad bug but I'm hoping to do the Meatloaf cake next week. But now I gotta throw the fixins for the Jewish Pennicilin in the crock pot and hope to hell I can stay functional at least through tomorrow night. My good friends son is running off to gut fish on a factory ship in Alaska and his good bye party is tomorrow night. I don't want to miss saying my farewells to the little shit. He's actually a hard worker so they are getting a good employee. I just hope he'll really be isolated from the drugs and alcohol for a while. I love this kid and while I hope this is a good thing for him, I'm a little worried for him being out there all alone on the cold deep sea away from his mom and dad. Maybe he'll send me a Halibut.

I will find something insane to cook, too, and then we can both post. How 'bout Deviled Eggs in Tomato Aspic? Or Crabmeat it Tomato Baskets? I am not doing the hot dog crown roast. Too Scary.

Good luck to your friend's son. The problem with moving is, no matter where you go, there you are. The problems tend to follow you until you change yourself. But maybe some time on the cold dark sea will give him some time to reflect

Someone mentionee those in another thread. Do you have a recipe? Is it a drink made with beets and gingerale served in a large martini glass? I'm curious......

30. Someone mentioned it in another thread,
but I couldn't figure out where the recipe was. I asked. Will let you know if I hear back.

Here is a good one:

Tomato Ice

4 c. tomato juice
2 tbl sugar
1-1/2 tsp salt

Mix all ingredients. Freeze. Serve with meat.

Serve with meat??????? I keep picturing a tomato ice cube slowly melting next to a nice NY strip. Or maybe it is some weird kind of popsicle? Things that make you go Hmmmmmmmm........

Pot pie with pastry dough is better, but let's face it, pastry dough makes almost anything better. This wasn't bad, and kind of cute. I might even make it again.

(I know 'funnest' ain't right, but it so describes us.) I'm digging out my Mom's old 1950's Better Homes & Gardens cookbook this weekend and see what I can best you on! It has those beeyoootiful pictures in it too and the food descriptions are precious. I am so tempted to make the crown roast of frankfurters! How do you make them stay BENT like that?

40. I think the crown roast of Dogs could be a winner
Edited on Fri Dec-30-05 01:18 PM by The empressof all
I think that the dogs may be sliced on the bottom to make a "wing-like" bottom which would give it some stability. Then I would imagine you would stand them on end around the pile of "innards".

With Costco HotDogs and some Bubbies Kraut cooked up with some fried onions in the middle...it could be a Winner!

On Edit: After examining the photo it appears the Dogs are cut in half and then propped around a frame of some sort. Could it be one of those squat little coffee cans they use to have in the olden days? I bet you could rig something up with some wire though to make the frame. My bet is that the dogs were cooked before the roast is created.
