what can be done to walnuts to stop mouth pain?
Walnuts! They're so nutritious. But so many people just can't eat them because they hurt the tongue and tissues of the mouth.

Is there some way of cooking them that will alleviate that problem? Blanching? Roasting?

Anyone know?

1. Not a good answer, but
I break one in half and take it like a vitamin now and then.

4. What TEOA sez....
Also effective: Chop them and put them in chocolate chip cookies!

Also chop fine and add to coconut for the topping to German Chocolate Cake.

Or just go hard-core and order a five-pound bag of Walnettos from Vermont Country Store.

helpfully,
Bright

5. Walnettos! That is hard core.
The Vermont Country store is a very dangerous place with all of those old favorite candies and snacks.

6. I'd love a Walnetto
However, as a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic.....

I fondly remember them.

7. I rarely eat them plain
and then only out of the shell. Because wrestling with nuts in the shell gets old fast, I never eat enough for it to start hurting.

I generally use them finely chopped or ground and paired with grated sharp Cheddar in entrees of various descriptions. There is never any mouth pain with them used in this fashion.

I think FAT might be part of the solution, something in both proposed ideas.

8. Toast them in an oven for awhile and then chop them.
Then you can add them to oatmeal, salads, fruit crisps, cookies, or vegetables.

10. sometimes cooking can reduce the allergen effect
Recently I bought 5 lbs of raw almonds. After eating a handful of them, I remembered why I don't buy them at the store! I can eat toasted tree nuts without suffering allergic reactions and have become so used to automatically reaching out to them over raw tree nuts that I had forgotten why I had been doing it in the first place. LOL! Old age ... memory's the first to go. I'll be toasting those raw almonds, it's simple enough to do -- those raw almonds were really yummy, and I'm so looking forward to eating them after the toasting! I bought them from Fed Up, a DU'er who sells them in CA. That gal has some good almond connections!

I'm one of those people who suffer mild allergic reactions to tree nuts (not to peanuts and other legumes). My mouth and ears get itchy, lips swell slightly and feel sore. Sometimes, itchy bumps form on my skin. It usually lasts about a day. People with these allergies are usually also allergic to pollen and some kinds of fruit like apples, peaches, and some vegetables. That's why I only eat cooked veges, love apple pie but hate fresh apples.

11. I never get canker sores in my mouth anymore, from nuts or citrus
or even chocolate, since I started taking L-lysine 500 mg twice a day for my cold sores.

High arginine foods trigger the darned things. Lysine blocks arginine uptake that herpesvirus needs for replication. I happen to be of the opinion that these sores are due to herpesvirus, and the high arginine levels in them "feed" the herpes.

FWIW.

13. agreed, I take L-Lysine too
and I am so happy to be able to enjoy bananas, nuts, oranges, etc again. But walnuts are still too much. If one even touches my mouth I get a raging canker sore. I hate it because so many people put walnuts in things like baked goods and salads. If I see evidence of a walnut, I don't eat it. Even picking them out, some of the acid in them leeches into the food. I'm glad it's not just me. And yes, try the L-Lysine. I used to get canker sores just from drinking a small glass of fresh oj.

14. I have fewer problems with pecans than walnuts, so that's all I bake with.
Trader Joe's has pretty good prices - I get my nuts there.
