Do any of you use an oil mister?
Looks like this:

Description of one here: http://www.recipetips.com/glossary-term/t--36009/vegetable-oil-spray.asp

Sparkly got one a while back. I at first looked upon it as a gadget to be ignored. Now I like it. It is very effective and allows a much better control of the oil content and the amount of oil used when, for example, grilling peppers. I used to drown them in olive oil only to have most of it drip off and be wasted. Now, by spraying them, I use less and waste almost none.

Think of it as PAM without the packaging and propellant.

1. I had one off the shelf and filled with safflower oil
many years ago. I got two refills out of it before the sprayer clogged irretrievably, meaning even a needle couldn't dislodge enough of the plug of oil turned to bathtub sealer to get it functional again.

I haven't seen a mister on the shelves of the kitchen stores here or I'd have gotten one, even if it lasted only a few months. That's how much I liked the one I had.

This is probably a function of the arid air here in the high desert. Everything evaporates quickly, even oils, leaving behind a concentrate that often needs to be shifted by high explosives if it can be shifted at all.

2. I use this one:

I'm not a big Pampered Chef person but a friend was selling it for awhile. I never like the idea of buying the cooking sprays and did it only a couple of times, then switched to using a pastry brush, before getting this. The nice thing about the one I got, it came with an extra pump assembly, so when this one gives out, I don't have to buy a whole new one. I've been using it heavily for a year and it's still going strong.

I want to get a second one to keep for just olive oil. I have canola in the one I have now.

But yeah, it really is a great alternative for so many very good reasons. :hi:

3. we've gone through a couple.
love them. perfect amount of spritz without either the propellant or tossing the can. well, we've tossed one, but certainly no where near the number as if we'd been buying pam all these years.

7. I loved mine
but it eventually clogged up, or lost it's mist or something. I'm a little relieved to hear someone else had the same problem.

I can't justify getting a new one right now because a few years ago I took over an abandoned cafeteria and when the building closed I was stuck with the Pam that I had inherited. I have a few industrial sized cans of that, and holy cow I don't feel like it's ever going to be used up. I'd rather use the straight oil, but I don't want to throw these out when they are still working. I hope they are like twinkies and never go bad.

21. Mine clogged up as well, and I couldn't fix it. So I've been using
a bottle with a drizzle spout on the end. Too much oil is poured, but I'm getting better and minimizing it. I loved the mister, though.

12. Tossing them when they go bad ........
..... isn't so bad, really. They're cheap enough. If yu get as little as a year out of out, I'd say you're ahead of the game in saved PAM costs and in reduced oil use.

20. As an aside, DH & I were on vacation. We were driving from
our friend's house to my sisters and had plenty of time to kill so we were taking the back roads in California Gold Country. We drive by a kitchen gadget store. The window was filled with copper ware. So we decide to stop. This store had gadgets that I had never seen before and I thought I knew all of them. We spent over $100. And it was all little items. We didn't buy the immersable blender I was dying for or the counter top ice cream maker or any of the other big ticket items I wanted.

Don't tell Husb2Sparkly, but I realized after we left that I hadn't even gone in the room with all the copper pots, etc. Probably a good thing since we would have spent even more.

5. I had something like that at one point
although honestly I just use PAM nowadays, but there's something to be said for misted oil - a lot of the desired effect without the drenching.

15. Oh, darlin', I suppose so
but I'm going to have to get rid of something - either the container the PAM came in, or the container the oil came in.

It's not like I replace it once a month either - one spray can lasts me quite a while.

But I am trying hard to be a good Earthly citizen, believe me.

10. Love em so much I have three
I keep one for olive oil, one for peanut oil and one for my walnut oil to spray my salad with. They are really terrific and I think taste much better than Pam.

11. I must be a freak
I never use Pam. Never have it in the house. I grease or butter pans using a bit of wax paper or paper towel and my digits. For oiling, I use a pastry brush. Yeah, Pam would be great for muffin pans, but I just never have used it.

I wonder about re-using those little brand-name salad dressing misters as oil misters. It might work.

But thanks for bringing up the oil mister, Stinky. I know someone who would think it was a terrific birthday gift.

13. I can't imagine why reusing a salad dressing mister would be bad.
Even if you get only two or three refillings before it dies. You're ahead by those two or three refillings. Assuming that's your regular choice of salad dressings, go for it. If nothing else, it is called 'recycling'.

17. Freak #2 here
I just keep old butter wrappers in the fridge or freezer and use those. Aside from not discarding another napkin, when I've used napkins I've often ended up with napkin bits on my pan. Yuk! I also use a pastry brush for other oils.

19. I have two.
One for olive oil and one for grapeseed oil. They are the two oils I primarily use. Both mine were filled with olive oil so I got them for almost free.
